So, there I was, engrossed in taking some photos, when I put my foot in a ditch and went flying onto the tarmac into the path of an oncoming cyclist. I'm very proud of my split-second priorities, as I allowed my knee and elbow to take the brunt of the fall as both my hands cradled my camera. The camera is unscathed, which is more than can be said for me.

I also got quite a nice photo of the cyclist, who stopped to see if I was OK.

Well done, bones are cheaper to fix than cameras:)

I remember accidentally stepping into a ditch on a rally once.

Fell flat on my face but managed to save my camera (T90 with 300TL on board) while pretty badly bashing the hand that was holding it. Strained all the ligaments in my upper arm and shoulder.

Situation not helped by oncoming rally car and my friend laughing like a drain rather than coming to my aid!

The wound was full of tiny pieces of Welsh slate/gravel which despite cleaning the wound continued to work their way out of the skin for several months afterwards.

Following a motorcycle accident, I had a single bit of gravel come out of my knee several years afterwards. Just came to the surface and worked its way out over a few weeks.

Nice one :D And the guy posed for you after! cool :)

Reminds me [loosely] of last September, I was racing along on my mountain bike, after buying presents for our daughter, and a few bottles of wine for us bigger kids ... dreaded Tesco-bag snap!! One of the bottles decided to lodge itself in the front wheel spokes and sent me flying over the handle-bars. I'm not kidding, mid-fall, I caught Mickey mouse! the wee teddy I'd bought as part of our then to-be 5yr old's birthday gifts. If not it was face first into a pool of wine [one of the bottles exploded on impact]

Best part even, was 2 bottles of wine survived, and a cart of eggs! Loss: 1 bottle of wine, 1 pack of bacon :( loaf of bread + my dignity. A kind chap who I'd just passed on the cycle path helped me up, I was a wreck, blood all over my arms and legs, BUT ... I saved Mickey mouse!! :D

Sorry, not trying to out-do your story, which I love, but to show I completely understand, and glad to see you saved your camera :) ... and got a good portrait to boot

Haha!

I can picture it in slow-motion - glance at the bacon, glance at the wine, hands grasping for Mickey, then the mouse held triumphantly in the air. And then, if it was anything like mine, a loud "oh **** that hurts".
