weekly Blondies 2012 52 wk52 BUSY - Finished !

Age - Those look lovely and sharp. Your triptych style works well also.

Spread - I'd go for #1 as a lovely example of the subject in its natural setting. looks pin sharp where it needs to be as well.

golly, you've been busy :)

natural I like em both but the fungi pulls it for me - I like the slime-effect

age - good triptych, fits the theme perfect, though I might have removed the stray petal in the final shot

spread - not so keen on the chestnuts as they look a little busy - maybe an isolated chestnut in the studio (aka table in the spare room) would have worked better. I do love the cobweb though, it's covered in diamonds!

Lovely shot of the fungi Lynne, nice composition and I like the lighting. Age, nice choice of subject, colour looks great on the bg. The spiders web is excellent.

Not been to Clumber Park for a very long time, how is it there these days?

Number 1 for me looks better to me 2 looks more confusing as to what it is and 3 is also good but 1 shades it for me

Hi Lynne
Age - Brilliant idea. Not seen your previous image but still think the top left would benefit from CW turn to equalise the three. Can't help with your editing programs I'm afraid.

Spread - #1 stands out for me. #2 seems not to have a clear POV, eyes dancing around the image. The lower third of #3 looks wonderful but overall a bit of a fussy BG

Hi Lynne

Age - I have come to this a bit later than others and so only see the edit. On theme anda really good idea. B/g look fine and the colours of roses are well captured. Like that little broken boundary idea - suits the shots. My crit would be about the positions of the stems (and i would not have made that on week 1 of this Challenge - so maybe I have learnt something from others) and that the 2 petals of the last rose that break the frame maybe should have been removed.

Spread - both good shots with good natural lighting and colours. #1 has the better comp with the seeds more to the left, the seeds upright and easily recognisable, the less contrast with the b/g whilst still retaining recognisable elements of it. Exc detail in the seeds

Hi, Lynne, shrooms for me. I wasn't sure about the shine but it's grown on me. Nice and sharp with a real autumnal sense to it. I don't have OCD but the little bit of white at the bottom draws my eye away. :)

The stags aren't too bad, either, just the main one getting a bit lost. Perhaps wait a second or two for the one in the real to shift out of the way.

Cheers.

Thanks Andy...I left the white bits in as was taking the theme of Natural to it's fullest...natural subject in natural surroundings...or maybe I just didn't spot them cos the shine was fascinating me
I did wait for the deer at the back to move..unfortunately the stag followed them

Hi, Lynne, Age, I saw the original and thought I'd commented....I mentioned that a flip would be chronologically better :) and it is. Composition, well crops are fine...and the BG look nice and clean/white. Having the stems comings from the exact same angle would have been good and I would have sssoooo tugged off the lower and left petal to make it cleaner. But that's just me :)

Cheers.

Sometimes I can be so dim..can't see the obvious..I was aiming for the main rose to be partially dead so left the 2 petals in tact...looking at it again I should have pulled them off & gone for a rose in full bloom :bang:

Hi Lynne - love your naturals. But sorry can't help with your decision. All v good but none stands out as best. But - what lens used please? Mike

Cheers Mike...was my trusty Tamron 90mm...the more I use it the more I like it

Age - Those look lovely and sharp. Your triptych style works well also.

Spread - I'd go for #1 as a lovely example of the subject in its natural setting. looks pin sharp where it needs to be as well.

Thanks Peter...I actually spent about 10 mins re-arranging the dead leaves...think I need help :D

Cheers Summer......I had a train of thought for the roses which wouldn't go away...& then missed the obvious...see my reply to Andy's comments on the stray petal

As for the chestnuts....I really wanted them in natural surrounds as lighting is easier , but hey , I know I can't please everyone :'(

Hi Lynne

Spread 2 for me... I like the green in the background, sort of lifts the shot for me making the chestnuts stand out more, lovely detail and a good idea for the theme

Thanks DK :)

Lovely shot of the fungi Lynne, nice composition and I like the lighting. Age, nice choice of subject, colour looks great on the bg. The spiders web is excellent.

Not been to Clumber Park for a very long time, how is it there these days?

Cheers Michael...Clumber park is my new favorite place...been down every weekend for the last month & still only seen about 1/8th of the place

Number 1 for me looks better to me 2 looks more confusing as to what it is and 3 is also good but 1 shades it for me

Thanks AJ...glad you like

Thanks Fazer...yeah ,should have turned them a little I think . You think the BG in 3 looks busy....you should see the color version

Thanks SP , appreciate your comments...agree about the stems...must try harder in future :bonk: Think chestnut #1 is the winner , my preferred choice as well

& so to week 43...only 9 weeks left folks

My 1st and for a change , only thought , was things that go together like :

Together like pea's in a pod by llj666, on Flickr

that then led to thinking about other stuff that goes together like ...

Apple Pie n Custard go together by llj666, on Flickr

That has to be one of the best theme's ever  Ate some of the pie last night & another helping after shooting this...totally scrummy

What did I learn today....

Lighting is a mare, no matter what I tried I got shadows & reflections .

The macro lens showed every little color variation in the pea pod - not helped by taking so long to decide what I angle I wanted as it started to dry out .

I may have to do a reshoot of this using my little light tent to try n minimise the reflections...actually I lie...I may have to try a reshoot just to eat some more of that pie :D

really like the pea shot, the pies good too to me you seem to have handled the lighting well. but I suppose you could revisit it just to eat more apple pie its a good excuse.

2 nice pics there Lynne, both have very good lighting and composition. Apple pie looks scrummy. The green of the filling looks quite saturated? My face has to be the pea pod though.

Cheers Michael...not sure whats happened to the filling , looks ok on my screen & I have'nt touched the saturation at all ?
& it was really really scrummy...having some more for tea tonight :D

really like the pea shot, the pies good too to me you seem to have handled the lighting well. but I suppose you could revisit it just to eat more apple pie its a good excuse.

Thanks AJ , yup , got a real feeling there may be a few more shots that include apple pie

Just done another take ( before I eat it for tea)...Tried it in the light box but not keen on the effect it's had on the custard..looks way too smooth  & I still can't get rid of that little shadow under the crust though most of the reflections have gone:)

Together like Apple Pie n Custard v2 by llj666, on Flickr

Hi Lynne
This could be the way forward, edible props
Of the three you've posted, my vote goes to #2, your first apple pie and custard shot. I think the refelctions give depth to the image and a 3D feel to the scene. In #3 my eye is drawn to the edge of the custard just above the handle of the spoon on the right. It doesn't look quite right IYSWIM.

#1 I like for its colour tones and lighting but feel it looks too flat with the absence of shadows. Again, as with the refelctions in #2, I feel shadows would add depth to the scene.

All IMHO of course, good work rate though, I have something of a mental block at the moment for this weeks theme. Iain

love all 3 shots, I love the swirls in the plate on no.2 - the colour looks ok on my hd screen :-) I think on the 2nd you could have left the spoon out maybe

Good show for Together.

#1, the composition is spot on. Nice and close in. Does appear very green. Me and my 'details', I did notice the small stem top left of the inside of the pod.

#2, great idea and not one I would have thought of. It's #1 for me mainly, but not solely, due to the close composition. Great colours and Iain says the reflections in the plate really add depth to the photograph. Crit, well there has to be some :D, the plate isn't too bad and I wouldn't want it to be pure white, just a tad whiter.

Overall, very impressive week for you....and it's only Sunday.

Cheers.

Thanks for the detailed comments Iain....I can't get my bloomin breath :D I blame Andy....the whole time I was shooting both the peas & the pie I kept hearing this little voice saying..." shame about the shadows & the swirly bits on the plates " Had a bit of mare doing the edit on v2 of the pie which is why there's something odd going on above the handle....tried cloning out some stray custard ! Took ages in pp to lose the shadow under the pea pod :bang:, if I get the chance I'll post another complete with shadows for added depth .................

Hi Summer....took a few shots without the spoon but then that little voice struck again..." icing on the cake would've been a spoon "

you do realise I blame you entirely for the fact I've had to keep eating apple pie today :p...& you're right , I hadn't spotted the stray stem...was too busy worrying about shadows .... & that plate ain't getting no whiter mister  unless of course I do a reshoot......
I still can't believe you don't object to the reflections , mind you , at least you haven't said it needs cropping
Needed to get this theme sorted , running interviews after work most nights this week ( service advisor job anyone ??) so I may not be round these parts till saturday now:'(

You still seem to be getting me confused with someone who has half a clue how to work elements  Only just sussed out how to cut & paste part of an image from one shot to another . PSE 8 had preset collages in it which were great but not so in 10...layers ? resize ??:lol:

Google everything, I do! Layers, resize

Oh I also play the PP game I've learnt loads on there about PP!

Best I catch up on your thread now

Hiya Lynne,

Thought I would pop past to see how you are progressing with your Photo52 and WOW, you are doing a great job. Your photography has come on in leaps and bounds since last year.

I'm loving all the pics, but the spider web one is brilliant as too are the weir shots.

Great stuff and keep up the fab work. You have done doing a 2nd Photo52 after the 2011 one. I might tackle another in the new year.

BTW .... went up to Ullswater two weekends ago and managed to get a shot of the boat house :D I've posted it here on TP, and it is also on my flickr. Was thinking of you when I was there and knew you would have loved to see it.

Will have to make a plan to meet up again some time, I'll be in contact.

Hope you have been keeping well, and keep up the great work with your photography.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi again,

Just looking through your spread shots, I think it's number one for me as I really like the composition and the colour of the leaves in the background.
I do like the green moss in number two but the chestnuts look a little busy. I would also cloned/ cropped out the light brown leafy thing top left just on the edge of the shot!
I do really like number three though, the detail on the droplets and the fact you got the eight leggd fiend in really makes it for me, although that blade of brass sticking in just above the spider looks like a knife, I feel that would be a good area to practice cloning;) As much as I like this shot I think number one fits the theme better

Together, I do like the pea shot, and I also though of peas together, I just don'y like peas :gag: I agree with Iain about it looking flat, but I'm less technical to me it looks like they're just kind of floating, the background is so white it looks a little clinical, if you get my meaning. lovely detail in the pod and the peas though.

It's got to be the first apple pie shot for me, I like the sugary detail on the crust and the custard has a nice shine to it like it's fresh and inviting you to eat it. Any photo that makes me want to eat the subject is always going to be a winner:thumbs: Alas the custard in the second one looks like it's cold and set making it a little unappetizing.

Love the web Lynne.

As for your backgrounds, were you on manual mode, was there much time difference between the shoots?
Your ambient light may have changed or your camera may have applied different settings if you were in a semi auto mode.

BG's bug the hell out of me. I can never get an even light with one strobe, but hopefully that's a thing of teh past now I have two :)

Keep up the good work, only a handful of weeks left now.

I'd go for #1 as my choice. I like the nice green against the stark white which works well as does the composition off to one side.

Hi Lynne

Together

#1 - peas - well handled exposure and good comp but I think a little flat as an image

#2 - pie and custard - very nice, well lit and like the patterns/reflections in the plate and cutlery. Looks very real and appetising, with texture in the fruit, pastry and custard. A really good food shot.

#3 - almost as if you were demonstrating the undoubted merits of #2. :D Almost lifeless, spoon looks stuck on, custard looks most unappetising. Flat light. Is that too harsh?

Hi Lynne,

Catch up night for me!

Age - a really good idea thats been well executed - I think everything else has already been said on it!:)

Spread - At first I was going for #1 of the single chestnut - not sure if a tighter crop would work better and then I scroll down to the web. decisions decisions! - I can't decide............ I'm going to stick with my original choice of #1

Together - Please can you send #2 over for me to sample for you!! The peas in the pod are lovely but I prefer the apple pie and custard. #3 is just a bit flat for me I prefer seeing the gloss!!

My thought for this theme was peas in a pod but you beat me to it. Lovely colour and composition. Prefer your first apple pie shot with the texture of the plate, just needs a bit of steam from the custard.

Off to get breakfast now ........ so hungry

Nice shot for peas in a pod! Do you use some kind of light box/tent for these shots? It looks like it could be in a magazine.

By the way, I always associated the idea of being like peas in a pod as being similar rather than being together. Maybe it's a northern interpretation ....:bonk:

Cheers Marsha...I'm one of those awkward peeps that learns best when somebody's sat next to me showing me how...I keep trying tutorials but it's a very slow process with me...I'll get there one day..possibly

Hi Hun , thanks for popping in....only very slightly jealous that you've been back to the boat house  Will def have to catch up in person soon , I really need a break & Cumbria sounds just the ticket

Hi again  Thanks for the comments & crit..spent ages in ps trying to lose the shadows under the pea's....:'( I was trying to do less pp on the Spread to try n keep then natural but get what you're saying, cheers missus

Ooooo Apple pie and Custard - Nom Nom Nom :D

Great idea and pic of the peas in a pod, but the 1st apple pie shot for me, I prefer the angle

Thanks Dk....that was by far the best Apple pie I've had in a good few years :D

Love the web Lynne.

Thanks for popping in Neil...you've managed to confuse me though:'( Which backgrounds are you refering to ? The apple pie ones or the Chestnut ones ? The original Apple PIe was on the worktop with flash , the 2nd one was in the light tent with on board flash & me waving the the other flash unit about in the general direction of the tent  Semi auto mode - what the hell is that ? Was in aperture priority I think , with manual focus. The chestnuts were deep in the forest with just natural light

I'd go for #1 as my choice. I like the nice green against the stark white which works well as does the composition off to one side.

Thanks Peter

Thanks Alan.... think I should have left the shadow in the Pea shot
Pie 1...glad you like
pie2 ...couldn't agree more...was trying to lose the reflections by shooting in the light tent , lesson learnt , it looks awful & plasticky , so no , your comments are honest & not harsh - thanks mister

Cheers Fazer , thanks for popping in & glad you like the Pie shot...1st one of course

By the way, I always associated the idea of being like peas in a pod as being similar rather than being together. Maybe it's a northern interpretation ....:bonk:

Thanks Bob...my though process was " Things that go together like Peas in a Pod "...I even googled that phrase cos the "Similar " thing was going round in my head as well .
ps...I'm not a Northerner

Hi Lynne -Together - Liking the apple pie shot - think that is your final choice. Super lighting. I'm salivating as I type...

Cheers Mike ....need to buy some more pie

Right... in to week 45...as weekdays are a no no for me currently I'm having to get my shots done on Sunday's which ain't leaving much time for the thought process to start working .
Pack...of cards ? ...couldn't find mine so went with the following after a quick google for all the definitions of PACK on this site :

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pack
a. A collection of items tied up or wrapped; a bundle.
a. A complete set of related items
3. To process and put into containers in order to preserve, transport, or sell

Pack jpeg by llj666, on Flickr

Not the most imaginative shot I know but limited time etc etc ,bit of messing in pp to get the color & lighting just as I wanted .Would have loved to use bathroom tiles as a BG but not do-able in my shoebox of a bathroom.

Also wanted to say a MAHOOOOSIVE thanks to all you guy's n Gals for your continued support , it really is much appreciated & is helping to keep me going with this challenge . I will catch up with all your threads over this next week

Nice one Lynne:thumbs:
This looks very professional, it could easily be used for promotional material.
I particularly like the lighting on this, care to share?
It fits the theme well, lovely warm colour tones too, all round good work Missus ;)

Hi Lynne, this looks very pro and something you'd expect to see advertising a spa or beauty treatment! The lighting is lovely and that with the subtle colours makes the towels look very soft.

I hope your work starts to calm down soon so you can get more time to pamper yourself!!:):)

Many thanks Iain, that means a huge amount coming from you:) Lighting ..... I should at this point start talking about ocf, snoods & bounced flash I guess ? Nothing so fancy.....bedroom light on, large peice of silver card above the towels to stop slight glare on the ribbons followed by some tweaking in pse to lighten the bottles , little twiddle with levels ,crop, sharpen & thats it

Hi Lynne - Pack - good idea for theme and i do like the composition and layout of the towels and the spa products - you certainly go to town on props - no expense spared :). Good light on the items and you have managed to make the towels look uber soft.

My only problem is the b/g and f/g (and I may say now that it may be diff on my monitor to yours). I can't work out if it is a towel, a bath mat or a carpet and if it is flat or whether it curves up behind the items (at a point where the colour changes on the rhs). It is such a close colour match to the towels that it prob does not set them off as well as a contrast colour. Nice shot nonetheless.

Short but hopefully sweet feedback on the shots. Some really strong ones there!

Body - great detail on this, nice focus and come out well.

Up - lovely and bright. Definitely says up to me!

Duo - love it, B&W makes this shot. #1 is my fav for the light hitting the clouds.

Flow - spoilt of choice. #1 looks a bit like a painting. #2 works well as a B&W, brings out the details. For the purposes of the theme I would maybe chop a little off the top but it might spoil the shot.

Friendship - good attempt at people pictures. I know what you mean about feeling a bit uneasy. You just feel like everyone is watching.

Change - #1 edited for me. Good DOF and caught the detail well.

Natural - #1 for me, cracking shot!

Age - nice flower shots, crisp clear and the colour of the flower has come through well.

Spread - loving the spiders web!!

Together - Peeeeeeeeeeaaaaaasssssss. I vote for this one, and will eat #2!
