Cheers Marsha....I'd love to be able to say the lighting was really technical......but it wasn't......black card taped to window with blinds drawn to either edge & long exposure :lol: Just checked the settings.....f20 iso200 10 sec exposure . I think it maybe something to do with the plane of focus ....the front of the leaves being closer to the lens than the back ones ? but then again I may be talking total twaddle :lol:
 
Hiya Lynne, nice pic that. The lighting has worked well. I would suggest focusing a little more towards the front of the leaf so everything would be sharp from there on, well, should be! But that oof bit doesn't make any difference to me on this occasion

I'm really liking this one. Great detail in the roots, nice greens, dark BG. I like the weathered leaves.

Did you use flash or light paint??

The slightly OOF leaves don't really bother me, to be honest.

My only slight crit is the composition....I'd like to see it nice and central; equal space left, right, top and bottom.

BTW, what tripod :D

Cheers Michael....I'll give that a go next time.....going on a macro training course end of this month so hopefully the next time a suitable subject comes along I'll possibly manage to get it right :lol:

Cheers matey....lighting didn't cost me a penny...all natural , taken in the conservatory with long exposure :D

& as for composition :p

Tripod...you cannot be serious , Jackie will kill you :lol: It's a Giottos MTL 9351B with a Giottos MH 5011 head....got it as a deal from WEX with a Giottos monopod thrown in :thumbs:

But seriously, great idea and nicely taken with the low-key background. As has been said already, a minor crop for balance would maybe be beneficial but I think its a nice photo.

Sounds about right to me, but I know nothing officially!!! I know unless everything is square on something is OOF!

One thing I read last year while doing my DSLR bootcamp through Practical Photography mag, apparently f16 is the best aperture for non full frame DSLR (I have no idea what camera you have) for getting everything in focus!
I wonder what everyone thinks/ knows?

Your macro course sounds interesting, I need to do one of those.

The course is with Going Digital & local to me in Clumber park....will let you know if it was any good :thumbs:

Good theme shot . Every now and then the obvious is the best and can be pretty quick.:D

Good composition on the crop and nice subdued lighting - to my mind the most important yet most difficult to achieve. The plant is a bit tatty:) but you have already explained your gifts to the natural world:)

Just looked at it a couple of times again whilst typing and i really do like the lighting.

Nope, I like that as it is, if you cropped a bit more off the top it would look cramped in i think
 
Lovely shot for 'Root', think the newest crop is really nice. I would have only liked a newer/fresher plant. The leaves on this one do look a little worn out for such a little fella.
Great shot though, works really well for the theme.
 
Good take on the theme Lynne, the lighting works well for the simple set up you described.
Tell me no plants were harmed in the making of this photograph? ;)

Cheers Snipet...it did start off fresh...took a bit of a bashing as I washed n dried the roots though :lol:
 
I really like the cropped version as well. The natural lighting suits it well. I too have been told in the past that between f8 and f16 are the best to use.

& so to week 8......I was really hoping for a theme to spark my interest....not to be though....this just seems sooooo much harder than last year , maybe I'm burnt out :shrug:

Got a fair few handmade objects around the house but struggled to think of how to create an interesting shot from any of them....so opted for a bit of light painting...

#1...this was a gift from JT Safari's in Kenya who took me on safari to Tsavo East & West last year....made by the local craftsmen/women in the village so fits the theme perfectly :

I really like numbers 1 and 2; great lighting. 2 might be better without the heavy block base though?
 
No1 for me, the light painting is nice.

I'm not sure either the composition or lighting on 2&3 works quiet so well.
 
Liking the first shot, well composted and lit nicely.

I can see what you were doing on 2 and 3 but still prefer number 1.

Number 2 could be improved a lot I feel if you square crop it to lose the bottom block and the dark blue section right at the top that's not immediatly obvious as black.
 
'handmade' No. 1 is very nice and fits the bill which I prefer only just to No 2. Your lighting technique is working nicely for you and looks good against the background.
