Blending issues

Hi there, I'm having problems blending an image. I have taken only two shots, one exposing for the sky, one for the foreground - ruling out HDR (to be honest I don't have much success with CS4's HDR programme as the images always seem poor when processed).
I have tried copying the foreground onto a new layer and using the history bush to bring through the correctly exposed sky, but I always have problems with alignment being ever so slightly off, taking ages to realign correctly. Once aligned the join line between the exposures always looks poor and obvious.
Can anyone please suggest whether I am tackling this correctly or whether there is a better method.

Many Thanks

Matt

Place the foreground exposed shot on one layer and the sky exposed image on a new layer above.
Change the blend mode of the sky layer to difference.
with the move tool., using the arrow keys nudge the sky layer till you pretty much only see black. This is the easist way to align the 2 images.

Change the blend mode back to normal when your happy they are aligned.
add a layer mask to the sky layer by clicking the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers pallete
select the gradient tool, make sure you are on white and black foreground and background colours (press D)
with a linear gradient draw a line from just above the horizon to just below the horizon.
This should give you a gradient from white to black(top to bottom) blending slowly over the horizon. revealing your foreground layer where the sky layer mask is black.

Thanks for the comments guys, I will try your suggestions. I find that some of the images I take have got potential, but my PS skills a currently inadequate and it becomes very frustrating!

Si.
