weekly blakesters 52 for 2013 Finally Complete! Last 3 weeks added

I was meaning to comment on your excellent interpretation of the Letter theme, and by the time I get around to it, you've posted another absolute cracker! A really, innovative take on the theme and a nicely taken photo to boot.

The r/h 'leg' is a bit oof, but it doesn't detract from an excellent pic. :)

Can I ask what you used as a background?

The leg being oof was as a result of the shallow dof I used to throw the background out.
The figure is standing on a piece of glass, the background is a large reflector with the silver side of it showing.

Letter - That's a great idea, was wondering what your prop was going to be, very effective, great blacks and very well set out, did you make a template to lay the bits in ??

Electric - Damn... you have done it again, boy that's a great model, and the plug as a guitar, love the focus/DoF that helps bring out the bright colours against the grey background, what a brilliant idea - b****r :clap:

really love the electric shot, obvsiouly a lot of work went into it
At first I thought it overbright....but actually I think now its spot on, I can see every detail and I keep coming back to have another look
great job :)

Cheers Chris, I wanted to hold it on the bright side for a different look. I think it was the shiny background which helped my choice, rather than having a black background.
 
Love that you made him, love his colours and his pose... and the composition and editing - in fact I Love the whole thing, simply ACE. 10/10 :thumbs:

I may well get/have every golfing affliction going Lynton on account of only having played about 3 rounds of golf in the past year :lol:

I am off to Benidorm, 5 rounds of golf over a week.
I am taking my camera gear so that if my golf is $h1t I can always get out with my camera.

I think the plug is a common object that gives a sense of scale to the figure.
The floor is actually a piece of glass from ikea, the background which is the silver side of a reflector is reflected in the glass giving the impression that the figure is standing on the same material as the background.

Next time though I will leave the clubs at home and just be the trip photographer, my golf left a lot to be desired :lol:
 
I managed to submit this weeks theme just in time.
It is a bit of a crowbar into the theme but that sits ok with me :lol:

These are all made by my own hands, not an original concept but one which I was wanting to do.

My thoughts were musical direction as in a conductor.

Maybe the one on the left could do with a slight turn to give him a bit more dimension?

Iain, you have a real talent. This is a real artistic interpretation of the theme. The detail is amazing.

Well light, composed and cracking detail.

Now, I've had a few, but can I see 'March' in there :thinking:

Where do you even start with something like this?

I think the composition is spot on. I like the angle of the pianist as it gives an impression that the piano has more keys than it actually has.
The conductor really looks the part.

Not that it's an issue but the top of the double bass and the drummer have a bit of glare on them.

You're wasted in your current career, people would pay money for some of the things you make :notworthy:

None of Mrs Blakesters good cutlery was harmed in the making of this weeks subject :lol: Cheapo Tesco's forks, 4 for 95p, bargain!

I see what you mean about the left hand one, I shall give it a go turning the piano player round.

Yes it is a bit tight at the bottom, my excuse is I am away from home visiting the folks at the moment and don't have access to my usual equipment, I had to adapt, overcome :lol:

It has a few flaws but for the limited equipment I had to work with, I am really pleased how it has turned out.

I noticed the glare on the couple of figures you mentioned but I tried quite a few angles with the ocf but couldn't quite eliminate the glare. I kinda like it if I am being honest, I like the star effect :lol:

I would love to be able to do something career wise with photography and what I would call my art ;) but its a pipe dream I think but it is very kind of you to say, thank you so much for the vote of confidence.

This 52 has taken a different turn this year, it seems to have become more about the subjects than the photography.

I enjoy making these models as much as the taking photographs.

I will remember our deal when/if I ever become famous ;) :lol:

Although both my girls are grown up and temporarily flown the nest Marsha, we still have all their toys in the house. Kids toys have a lot of photographic potential IMHO. The bright colours are very appealing. Arty bits and pieces especially.
I never pursued any art subjects at school, opting for more technical subjects which initially took me into engineering when I left school. I have no regrets about that but wish I'd taken up photography sooner. It is only very recently I have explored my arty side :lol:

The meetandy is referring to is the Cumbria meet in June, it would be lovely to have you along, child care permitting of course :D

As I mentioned above, I love making the subjects for each weeks theme as much as taking the photographs. I am indulging myself in doing so, it gives me an excuse to be creative. In everyday life I don't get the opportunity to be artistic, I am a police officer by day ;)
I would love to take my photography and the art further. I don't think one would exist without the other. Photography allows for my art to be seen, I wouldn't have an avenue otherwise for people to see it iyswim.

Having read a couple of police statements about me, I'd say you have adequate room for artistic license in your day job!:D

I see what you mean though, and who better to photograph your sculpture to best represent it than you. You can use one form to enhance the other, and clearly do!:thumbs:

No comment on the subject of your police statements Nick ;)

I enjoy making the sculptures but am under no illusions about their saleability. They are cheap and cheerful everyday objects, not worth any money at all but if they put a smile on someone's face then that's good enough for me.
 
Value and saleability are two entirely different things (although I'm sure it's very nice when they converge). They're very pleasing things to look at.

Hi Iain

I had a quick look at this last night before I went to the pub and did not comment - but the thread hs been busy since then!!

Your usual very high standard. :clap: Beautifully and expertly crafted props which brought a smile to my face. My only minor gripe was that I did not see the connection straight away, altho I accept entirely the thinking. So then i tried to decide why, and I think that it is because the conductor does not stand out enough for me - initially I just thought that he was a musician - so perhaps my only crit would be that, in an ideal way, he should be more forward/detached/in control of the others. :thinking:

Lovely dark b/g which made me think of black velvet curtains from which the star of the show is about to appear. Excellent lighting - real show biz/filmic quality.
