weekly blakester's 52 for 2012, Week 52 "Busy (Beach Party)" Post 1215 FINISHED

I attended the Chinese New Year Celebrations on Sunday on the TP meet but was also thinking along the lines of this weeks theme of secure.

This photograph is of two youngsters who were stood atop a stone bollard to get a better view of the celebrations and whilst taking it wasn't necessarily thinking of secure but when I was browsing my photographs later at home I particularly liked this one. The smaller of the two girls had her arm wrapped tightly around the taller girl and there is a helping hand from a parent for extra support. She must have felt quite secure from her vantage point.

This second image is a more obvious take on the theme of secure or should that be insecure? :D

I am posting these quite early in the week (for me) as I am away from home working for the rest of the week, without computer access. Comments and criticism welcome as always.

Iain

The first one is a great photo!

The second one although is bang on theme, doesnt do it for me for some reason.

Cheers Ben, after last weeks entry I wanted to post one which didn't need any crowbarring into theme. My first choice is #1 but wanted to post one that spoke for itself without explanation.

Shot#1 is excellent and knowing the theme, very easy to interpret. Hand around the waist, supporting hand in glove - very secure. Good composition, good colours, good dof - altogether a lovely photo and pleasant to look at. Secure with a smile on its face.
#2 pales by comparison.

Great work Iain, the first image for Secure is fantastic. Super sharp and really conveys the theme, well done!

Hi, Secure #1 was well captured. Such joy in their faces and the parental hand works a treat.

Slight crop at the bottom to just above the stray heads works for me and emphasises the hand.

Nice one.

Like the image of the girls, it would have been much more on theme if there had been some way to emphasise the parent's hand - the wheel is on theme, hopefully though the rest of the bike hadn't been nicked :D

No 1 for me too think its bang on theme I think the steadying hand makes the shot,
No2 doesn’t do it at all sorry, for me the DOF should have included the lock, and the background is very busy.

Sweet - I like your idea on the theme.

Secure - I like #1. It was well seen especially at an event that would normally take your full attention. I think you've shown the benefit of turning around and finding another focal point.

2 fantastic pictures, both different but both great interpretations of the theme.
Its a shame about the balloon in the first. It just steals your attention a bit.
I love the curling top bar in the second, sending your eyes to the lock. I'd be pleased with both.

Well done Iain another good take on a theme and well spotted!

It certainly shows secure the parental hand and the fun on the girls faces makes this for me!!

The first post for secure is a lovel candid portrait - well done!

#1 is a great photograph. I think the human element is much more interesting Iain than the cycle park image even though this is a from a pleasing perspective. Nice processing too !

Thanks! #1 is my choice too, #2 was posted to make sure I had an image with no ambiguity on the theme. Thanks also for your interpretation of my photograph, its much appreciated Alan

Cheers Ben, for your kind comments.

Nice one.

Thanks Andy, I did consider a crop but decided to leave the heads in as I felt it gave a bit more perspective of the girls being at height.

Your first is a great image, it's fits the theme and is very well done. The DOF is perfect, isolating the two children and the helping hand and the focus us spot in.

Cheers Phil, I am glad it fits the theme and others 'get it'

Thanks to you too Gramps :)
I am afraid that is how I found the wheel, so I think someone must be missing the rest of the bike :(

Thanks for looking Trevor, I take your comments on board

Thank you! I must admit I was concentrating more on the crowd than the show. It was too crowded to get to the front for uniterrupted views so I decided the crowd gave more photo opportunities.

Hi Iain,

I'm not so keen on shot #2, perhaps because I'm comparing it to #1 which imho is just in a whole different league. It is just a brilliant image, love it. The facial expressions and body language are spot on for the theme. You've captured the magic of street photography. Well done.

Carol

As other have said, the second one fits the theme - but it's #1 for me - lovely lively shot catching a fleeting moment.

Jean

Thanks Jean, its #1 for me too, #2 was posted as a safety net for the theme :D

I like those shots. Really like the lonely wheel

Cheers Robert, much appreciated!

Me too I like the lonely wheel

Thanks to you too Chris.

Boy am I behind on secure comments....

Love the pic of the girls, certainly says secure to me - Great DOF as usual

Wheel shot - Great composition, really like the curved bar, but would like to see the lock in focus and the high street oof - not asking much am I :D

I need to pull my finger out as this is another thread I've missed, all great photos. Love your take on sweet week.

I know what you mean about the focus on the wheel shot, it was my intention to get the writing in focus with the background out of focus. The shop front writing is just too bright against the background for it to blur as much as I would have liked but as it is my #2 I am not too concerned. Thanks for looking/commenting.

Thanks Matt, there are a lot of threads to get round but cheers for stopping by :)

Week 6 - Industry
I had an idea spring immediately to mind on this weeks theme. I work in the Square Mile, the City of London, the heart of the UK banking industry. I should add that I don't work in banking, something far removed from it in fact!

I have added below, a couple of images which I hope are on theme.

#1 Is mainly of the Lloyds Building which I feel ticks the industry box on a couple of levels, (a) I think Lloyds have had a large media presence as far as the bank crisis was concerned and typify the banking industry. And (b), this building is very industrial looking in its architecture.

#1

#2 Was my original idea when this theme was posted. I wanted to show the City of London skyline with those buildings of the banking industry quite prominent against the much older building of the Tower of London.

#2

I found whilst taking these images that I would have preferred a wider angle. especially on #1. I feel that I was at the widest focal length I have 24mm and would have liked a bit more.

Thanks for looking, C&C welcome as always.

Hi Iain

alls been said about your images for Secure....#1 takes top spot in everyway for me....great expressions , bang on theme & lovely n sharp on the 1st girl...brilliant :clap:

Industry....that 1st image wiins for me....fab colors , unusual but great angle , lovely shapes & certainly on theme  Only slight niggle is a bit of noise in the sky ?

Pic 1 for Industry works really well.

Nice colours and angles........ though I am here in a cold sweat at the verticals, but not a lot you can do with that...

London at night looks great fun....

(By the way Lloyds of London - the insurers, are a different Lloyds to Lloyds TSB!)

Thanks Lynne, I have settled on #1 for secure too. It seemed the popular choice so that is the one I have submitted to the flickr group for the 52.

Industry, I never noticed the noisy sky until you mentioned it :D.
My PP skills are not up to doing anything about it though, so I will probably leave it as it is

Thanks again for looking/commenting, I will now get around to visiting other threads as I tend not to look at them until I have posted my own image for the theme.

I will add a wee bit of artistic licence to that one then :D

Secure - #1 works really well for me the v shallow DOF.
Industry - #1 as well - liking the colours very much and excellent composition.

Thanks Mike, each of the #1's were my first choice too

Hi, Iain, I like the perspective of #1, but would like the top of the main building to be in the photograph.

I know what you mean about #2, an inch or so either side would be nice. I find the front of the walls a tad bright and they tend to overpower the photograph.

Cheers.

Hi Iain thought i'd commented on secure, but obviously not, its #1 for me

Industry i can't make my mind up between the 2, i love the space age feel of the first, but i also love the combination of old and new in the second, the only thing i find annoying about 2 is the tree in the foreground on the right

Cheers Andy, I think the things you have pointed would have been aleviated by a bit more width. Obviously not the bright walls but with such a dynamic range, it would take a bit more PP work or a filter of some sort. Thanks for looking/commenting.

Again, PP work may have sorted the tree by cloning it out. I too liked the old/new contrast.

Hi Iain,

It's the first one for me, the lovely green colour swung it for me, I was wondering what it would look like if you took a few steps to the left...then I checked your flickr page and found out! I like both of these. Well done.

Carol

Fat cat industry shots fit the theme and the tabloids at the moments. Very well photographed BTW. ;)

Works well for me I take it you have gone really wide looking at the perspective nice and sharp

Thanks for your kind comments Carol, I was tempted to post the other in here too but didn't want it to get too image heavy. Thanks also for taking the time to look in my flickr too.

Thanks Trevor, no it wasn't particularly wide, 24mm is as wide a lens I have. I would have liked it wider but hey ho I had to go with what equipment I have.

Number 1 for me Iain.

I agree that the top of the building would have been great and although the lens wasn't as wide as you wanted could you have lost the bottom part of the shot to gain the top? The scaffolding at the bottom could be lost without taking anything from the picture IMO.

Great shot

#1 for secure for me. Really nice image and good take on it.

For industry, I love these types of shot. Like both of them but I think #1 has it for this theme

Thanks Alex, its #1 on both of these themes for me too. I worry at times that I have to crowbar my images into theme so have tended to post a safer option each time to make sure I have met the theme.

Good point Ben
I could have raised the camera to bring in the top of the building but wondered that the building wouldn't be grounded as such.
Thanks for looking/commenting.
