blakester's 52 for 2010, Weeks 51 & 52 Page 12 (Finally Finished)

secret - yeah i bet the blackberry was lighting up like no-ones business as 15 mins earlier Lisa had sent all her friends a message saying "bloody hell, Dad's got the camera out again!"....... Personally I like it, but can see the reason for the lap top comments.

Urban - very nice - I tried something similar in Southwold with the lighthouse and Adnams Brewery a few weeks back. Very vibrant and works a treat......... helps to have clean windows!

Great reflections. A little too "glowing" for my taste but they do make you keep looking just to check which bits are reflections and which are not !

Hi Iain,
Been a while since I dropped in, so a few to catch up on.

Distant : Yes. I like this a lot. Great colours and really well thought out. I would have liked just a little more detail in the sky, but that's not really a big deal for me. However, if you could have lined it up it would have been great to have the moon a bit further into the shot rather than right at the edge of the frame.

Secret : Absolutely superb lighting
I agree with the other comments about it looking a bit laptop-like and think just a little change in the angle of the box would have made a huge difference here.

Urban : Without a doubt it's the first one for me - the bus makes more of a statement and really brings the effect to life.
Very, very clever take on the theme and well executed. I wish that I'd felt as much inspiration this week.

Cheers Lynton, I tell you that blackberry never stopped the whole time Lisa was sitting there  What do these young 'uns have to say to one another?

Yes , i agree about the windows being clean, it certainly helped. Thanks.

Great reflections. A little too "glowing" for my taste but they do make you keep looking just to check which bits are reflections and which are not !

Thanks JL, I think the glowing is me having upped the saturation a bit. Cheers for your comments.

Thanks to you too Sarah, long time no 'see' :D I am not sure if I have any images with the moon further into the shot, I must have a look.
I am pleased with the lighting in secret, but not so much its laptop like quality .

I too prefer the first urban, thanks for your positive comments.

Wow! Super shot & the first one is definitely my favourite - great stuff! The symmetry grabs the eye & the lighting / saturation add to the appeal.

Phil

Very clever and very well done Iain, I agree about the first one, the bus really makes it pop out. Without the reflection, I don't think this would work so well but a big  from me.

I thought I'd commented on some of these Iain. Apologies.

Distant: Great colours. I was in Clacton, walking along the front earlier this week and I saw one of these and I thought - 'I've seen this somewhere on the forum'. Works really well with the moon.

Secret: Lovely shot. Very well lit. Looks like we had similar ideas with the lighting. You seemed to have cracked it though.

Urban: Cracking idea. I prefer the shot with the bus as it has a more complete symmetry with the glass roof.

Cheers Phil for such positive comments, they go a long way I can tell you. The latter part of this 52 has been a bit of an inspirational struggle and comments like yours really help. Thanks

Thanks John, the consensus seems to be with #1 which was my first choice too. Cheers

Thanks to you too Paul. Yes, similar ideas with secret....great minds think alike ;)

Love your urban shots, Iain, especially the first one. I am a bit slow on the uptake and spent some time wondering how you managed to get those buses in such symmetry  I had to read the comments before I twigged :cuckoo:

Very clever

Jenny

Thanks Jenny, I am glad you had to work it out, that was my intention in posting, a wee bit of an optical illusion.

Week 44 'Train', this had me thinking a wee bit on how to produce an image that was not stating the obvious for this theme. I visited a few small rail stations but I must admit I felt uncomfortable standing there with my camera. I thought something abstract but failed to achieve :D. What I have produced does not say train and I am not even going to try and crowbar this image in. I post this simply because I like it. It does have a railway/train connection because it is of the Chappel Viaduct, over which a train line runs. I have also posted an image of the viaduct for reference. C&C welcome as always.

Great idea for urban Iain, the reflections work really well, i think the bus makes the shot though.
Train, as soon as i saw it i knew it was a viaduct so it does speak train to me, its an unusual structure and works well looking down the middle. I also like the mono of the full bridge, im not sure if i prefer this out of the two as its a good landscape shot.

Cheers Chris , I didn't think the colour image said train but you do and I much appreciate that. I prefer colour in my images, the mono of the full bridge was, as i mentioned more of a reference but I am glad you like it too.

Great colours in the bricks in the abstract.

Thanks JL, as I mentioned above, I do prefer colour and the warmth in the brick colours certainly caught my eye.

With a little background info the first shot isn't a crowbar at all and makes for a visually arresting and interesting image - it is much stronger than the landscape IMHO.

Phil

Thanks Phil, my intention was to have the colour photograph as my main image for this theme, the landscape purely for reference purposes. Perhaps as photographers we can be our own worst critics  I just wasn't sure about my image being on theme, certainly without the background info it does not scream train.

Definitely on theme for me Iain
I had a good idea what it was as soon as I saw it and it really doesn't need your landscape shot to give it context (even though I really like that shot)

You're going to hate me for this, I know that you love colour in your shots, but I'd love to see that abstract in B&W . . . sorry :coat:

Urban- That first one is a great reflection shot. I had to look at it again to see how it was done. London is definitely urban

Train- A good picture of the viaduct. Its interesting seeing it from a different angle from how I usually see it.

Hi Iain, this is one of those "multistable perception" shots. It took me a while to figure out whether it was pointing towards me or away from me. Glad you posted the second shot otherwise I would not have been able to figure it out.

Another very clever take on the theme

Jenny

ok - i am going to be controversial here......

firstly don't know if I am still in a position to comment, given that my 52 is somewhat halted...

If you think i am not, ignore the next paragraph....

sorry don't like it one little bit - and it pains me to say so, but you know me, mate, I'll say what I think. I can see what you were trying to do, and to be honest a clever idea, but for me, and this is my opinion only, it doesn't work... (for me!)

:lol::shrug:

Thanks Sarah, most people seem to have got it without explanation, I will take that as a positive. Oh and seeing as you asked so nicely, here's a B&W ;)

Thanks for your comments Sue. I am glad you had to work out urban, that was my intention. Yes Sue, in all the years I have lived down here in sunny Essex, I only ever had one view of the viaduct. It was enjoyable to go on a bit of a wander along the path near the viaduct to get an alternative view.

Thanks Jenny, as with Sue and my urban shot, I am glad it took a bit of working out and was not an obvious subject. :D

Lynton, of course you are still in a position to comment, all views and opinions are welcome. I certainly wouldn't ignore the Norfolk Mafia  and what you had to say.
There's no need for an apology either I am all ears to others opinions and views. Can I ask though? What is it about the image that you don't like?

Thanks again to everyone (even Lynton :suspect: ) for your comments. Iain

You don't need a crowbar for this. I like them both - the first for the warm colours in the brickwork and the confusing perspective, and the second for the broad sweep of the the viaduct and the attractive sky. The slight distortion of the wide-angle makes it look almost alive.

Iain, wow, love that first one, although it's seriously messing with my eyes... the second is very nice, but it just doesn't have the impact the first does. It works in mono, but you know, I think it might have lost some of it's impact.

Iain,

Of course - in a way I guess there's nothing I dislike about it overly so, just nothing that I do like.

I guess if I am going to sit here and deconstruct it, which of course, I'm going to have to do is Firstly, without seeing the second pic I'd have no idea what I was looking at, especially with the theme of Train (yeah I know you mentioned that.) Secondly, to me the pic is unbalanced. If you chop if in half vertically, the right hand side is basically a brick wall with all the interest in the left half of the picture. Just my tuppence.

I will concede though to nice bright vibrant colours. I am assuming flash was used?

Thanks for your positive comments Tracer, the second image was more as a reference for viewers to establish what exactly they were looking at but I am glad you like them both.

Thanks John, I too prefer the colour image. Yes it does mess with the eyes if looked at for too long

Cheers Lynton, I appreciate your comments. The unbalanced nature of the image was a conscious decision, I have some in portrait orientation with the gap through the viaduct central. I was just not sure about the composition of those though. Once again, thanks for commenting and answering my query. All critique is valid and certainly appreciated.

great shot, love the location and depth to the shot

Thanks Dade, your comments are appreciated.

Nice striking image Iain. It seems just a little soft to me, but that could be my failing eyesight :D

Thanks for looking/commenting Paul. It may well be a bit soft, this was taken with the lens wide open.

Week 45, not long to go now .
This is my take on the weeks theme, I hope the subject speaks for itself.......share?

C&C welcome as always.

that one i do like - bang on theme - and I like the depth of field used and the colour of the gold foil being carried through to the glittery paper surface.

Overall the colours work well together......... the big question though is "did you share it?"

Cheers Lynton, I was looking to capture the warm tones of the gold wrapper and surface, I am pleased how this turned out. It did mean a few tweaks to balance the off camera flash.

Living in a house with 3 females, chocolate is seldom around long:lol: I bought a few packets of rolos to help fend off any choc attack on my props:lol: so there was plenty to go around.

Nice idea Iain, isnt the idea that you give your last Rolo not share it? The foil heart sets it off well and warms the shot up.

Do you know? I think you're right Chris but I will use a wee bit of artistic licence on that one:lol:. Thanks for looking/commenting.

I like the paper you used as a background for the share picture. It went well with the wrapper, and the heart shape is just right for "loving someone enough". Great idea. You are good at those table top shots and I am useless at them. Thats why I take street pictures.:)

Oh that's good. Love the colours. Off to find some chocolate now !

Thanks JL, hope you found some chocolate :D

That is really very good.
Very creative with the foil heart, love the gold sparkly paper and the link to theme is immediately obvious. My favourite shot so far this week.

Thanks to you too Sarah, I am glad you like it.

Great idea and good execution - a really interesting take on theme. It can be difficult to light metallic objects and I think you've done well here.

Phil

Great idea Iain and very well implemented. The gold heart really helps make it. Spot on with the lighting and colours...

Thanks Phil. You are quite correct in the difficulty lighting metellic objects. I had to have a good few attempts with off camera flash.
