Hey Arentol, please can you clarify - did the screw on your BR strap unscrew sufficiently to allow your camera to drop and require $300 worth of repair? I'm not sure if I've read your post right.

I am very happy with it. There does seem loads of adjustment on the plate. Yes the allen key does not go back in well when the plate is done up tight but you can see in the photo you can put it in the other end and it's very snug. Not that you even need to take the key with you as the tripod plate can be added and removed directly.

That is what happened. I had my 5d2 + Sigma 24 f/1.8 on an RS-7, which I had just got a few weeks before. I apparently hadn't tightened it down enough originally so it was slowly working loose as I used it, and I didn't think to check it regularly just in case. So one time I went to lower it to my side and when I released it from my hand it kept going right down to the sidewalk. The lens was entirely fine, saved by the hood, but the camera was scratched on the bottom and the jolt caused it to give me an error code and be unusable. Not covered under warrant because it was user damage, so they charged my about $320 total for the repair.
 
Thanks a lot for clarifying, Arentol. Dude you're one chilled out guy. I don't think I'd be so stoical about that happening!

I reckon those straps that have an "l-plate" are better than Black Rapid in that regard - if the tripod screw is working loose, you get an early warning when the plate gets loose.

(That, and the fact it moves the strap attachment to the corner of the camera which allows it to hang better - as Gman has said already)

Thanks, I actually am quite a chill guy. :)

It was 2 years ago so I think most people would have gotten over it by now. I was quite upset when it happened of course. The 5d2 was only a couple months old and I had a whole day of shooting to do that day as well. Fortunately I had my 7d with me as well so I was able to get my shots, but it was not a good day at all.

Also I am calm about it now because I long ago learned that if something bad has already happened dwelling on it will only make it worse. So I let go of any anxiety and upset over it within a few days of it happening and the only thing I held onto was the lesson I learned.... When you are hanging thousands of dollars of equipment from something be dang sure you know it is truly secure before you pick it up.

I like this idea to ensure a proper backup. The key ring idea is good but still relies on the d ring staying intact. It seems like the connector is more likely to fail due to unscrewing than the carabiner actually snapping. I'm surprised no one has made a product like this yet as it would probably sell quite well.
 
The carry speed I have has a similar setup but the main strap attaches to the lens and the second supports the camera mainly to let the lens hang at the correct angle but it acts as a backup aswell. If you don't have a long lens with its own tripod mount then having something which connects to the camera strap mounts instead would be easy to setup.
