Anyone using this combo - do you attach to the tripod collar or the camera body? I would assume you are supposed to attach to the tripod collar, but this makes the camera hang in an annoying way.

I don't think it would be straining the camera body/lens mount by not using the tripod, as the weight of the lens is hanging down, not sticking out horizontally like it would be on a tripod.

Anyone else have any thoughts/experience on this?
 
Mines In the tripod spot with that lens.
With the lens in the below post, I use the tripod collar.

I used to use the tripod mount on the camera with the 100-400 on my gripped 50D.

I'm now using a sun sniper attached to the the tripod mount on my 1D Mk IV fitted wth the 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM II.

Possibly on a smaller or weaker body it would be worth using the mount on the lens but, like you, I don't like the way the camera hangs using the mount on the lens.
 
I have the strap attached to the body for anything up to the 70-200, then keep a tripod quick release plate on the lens collar so I use a monopod if I need to.
 
I have mine on the camera body, 5d2 and 7d, mostly in a nightclud, because I dont like how it hangs on collar mount. I figured that the body as able to support the lens when using a standard neck strap.
I also have the pl14 plate mounted on the collar, with the replacement blackrapid bolt tightened through it, but never seem to use it as a fixing point.

Think it depends on how tight a space you are working in.
 
Think it depends on the weight of your body, which mount is closers to the centre of gravity.
 
I've got the RS-4 attached the tripod collar of a Sigma 120-300, with the collar rotated 90 degrees to help it hang better. I also use the hand grips on the collar to hold it steady as I'm walking

With the D3 and a 70-200 I tend to have it on the camera body but rarely just leave it to hang or swing about, I normally use my hand to steady it or sometimes hold the tripod foot as I am walking along - I don't have any issues if I am just standing around.
 
Interesting, thanks everyone - I'm surprised people don't find attaching it to the tripod collar mount annoying - it doesn't seem to hang properly for me at all.
 
I just angle mine so the lens is pointing downwards towards the rear, I can't say I have had any issues. Although of late because I am currently on crutches it's bit of a trick trying to get around with the camera! :)
