Yes, potentially very useful, regardless of cost.

But, pure black (and even normal black) isn't needed. Even a pure white background will photograph as pure black if no light falls on it, so it's all about light positioning, using the right modifiers, and getting the lighting close to the subject and (relatively) distant from the background.
