I am looking for a new mobile phone as my current contract is coming to an end. I have looked at a Blackberry 8520 or a HTC Hero. Has anyone had any experience with either as I am tired of reading reviews. Any advice welcome.

Thanks
Graeme

I have an HTC Hero, it does what it says on the tin.

The problem with any comparison for anything, is that it is all subjective.

Canon/Nikon/Pentax/Sony

United/City

White wine/ red wine

Spit/swallow

I've got a Hero. My complaints are, (some of these could be down to not reading the instructions, but): 1. Screen saver cuts in when your on a call so it's hard to slam the phone down! iphone comes to life as soon as you pull it away from your ear.
2. it doesn't keep emails, seems to delete them all after 7 days.
3. screen is a bit too small
4. battery doesn't seem to last long
Other than that it does what it does.
I may be slightly biased as I have an iphone too which is peeeerrrrrfect! :)

Dunno about the Hero, but the ridiculously named HTC HD2 looks mighty swell to me. 4.3 inch Capacitive, speedy, looks helluva lot nicer than iPhone. ;)

And running windows mobile 6.5 :gag:

It is a fantastic phone that is let down by a woefully inadequate operating system (Made barely half decent by HTC's sense UI)

Just got a HTC HD2, only used to text and call before so a massive jump in technology for me. I love it does exactly what I need, massive screen and I didn't want to be an iphone sheep.

Install Shakeawake -

Can set to todays mail, 3 days, 7 days, 14, 30 or all - mail --> settings -->send & receive --> download options

Agree. An in-car charger or spare charger cable is useful

Hero here - brilliant apart from the camera (absolutely shocking) and the battery life (not brilliant sorted by several strategically placed mini USB cables).

When the Android 2.1 update comes out, it will be awesome (googlemaps with speech aka free sat nav to name but 1 feature).

No experience of the Blackberry, but I love my Hero, especially as people often ask what it is!!!

I have a sneaky suspicion that (If the current reports on android 2.1 in the UK, ie Nexus One are true) that the turn by turn will only work in the US

You have to pay extra to get all the features working on a blackberry – well on t-mobile you do £5 per month.

I have had various Blackberrys for about 5 years now and also own an iPhone 3GS (bought about 3 months ago). No Hero but the Blackberry is a solid and robust phone that is very efficient at what it does and excels at email. The iPhone is a more fragile piece of kit but much more sexy with a better interface. The email is not as sophisticated as the Blackberry but it is much better at everything else eg web browsing, clever apps that make use of the its features such as touch screen and accelerometer.

I would equate the Blackberry to a Mercedes -> efficient and robust and the iPhone -> Alfa Romeo much more flair but worried something will break (many people have cracked the glass by dropping it - approx. £120 repair)

I would expect the Hero to stack up similar to the iPhone against the Blackberry although maybe a touch less sexy but a little more robust

Ah b****r!! Perhaps they'll be an upgraded rom from the internet geeks to solve that problem for people with a rooted phone. I've got that Google Voice Search already on mine!!

friends of mine have the hero and really rate it
personally for battery life, all phones suffer if you keep all the gadgets turned on, wifi, BT, etc

his advice though was get the android update, it really speeds things up!
I was very impressed with the hero, android is a good way forward.
the camera though is pap

I love my Hero :)
It was either Hero or Storm2....Hero won.
Battery last whole day with inernet connection all the time switched on ( and not 2G)
so thats fine with me as I get emails through the day.
At work here we use Exchange Server so I recieve emials on me mbile straight away when they get on server ( who needs blackberry ;D )
Camera is not the best one ( ve seen few BB with better one and iPhone has better one) but it does ok in day light
Have a look on few snapshots taken with Hero :)
Linky
And Android as a system works great :)

Google voice search is awesome

Android 2 is very good, I've got it on my milestone and it just works so well. I'll report back on what 2.1 is like when I get my Nexus One.

Depends what contract you're on and what network. I'm on Vodafone and for £30 a month I get everything included.
