Black & White Conversion for portraits

Hello,

Just looking for some advice on Mono Conversions for portraits. Using LR4, i use one of the presets and then bump up the the clarity, which i like the look of.

I have seen other examples of mono portrait work where the the conversion looks like there is more depth to the photo.

Just wondering what methods you would use for conversions and any examples?

I use the presets as a quick way to do it to a batch of photos and then go through and adjust to my preference. I never trust the presets 100%.
