Black screen when waking up from sleep

Hi, I'm a bit lost with this problem and I don't really know where to start trying to fix it.

When I shut down my laptop, it restarts with no problems at all. However, when I put it to sleep and come back to it later to wake it up, everything starts doing its thing (fans, hdd etc) but the screen won't come back on, it's just stuck with nothing on it. The only way I've found to resolve this is to unplug, remove the battery and reboot it.

Any ideas?

If my battery gets low it does this. I plug in the power supply shut the lid and reopen it and all is fine.

Thanks for the response, it can't be the battery unfortunately. Most of the time I'm plugged into the power supply as I use my laptop predominantly for gaming and photo editing and I'd be lucky to get an hour out of the battery going at full power!
