Since having a tablet I haven't really used my laptop, however I did try it and apart from the fact the battery had run down, when running on the mains I had the above problem. It starts up OK, and after going through the normal start up eventually asks for my password, when I put it in I get the usual welcome screen but then everything except the curser goes black. I've looked on YouTube and it seems to be quite a common problem, I tried one possible answer which was press ctrl/Alt/Del to get into the task manager, I typed in explore.exe, but that was as far as I could get. Most of the other solutions I either couldn't hear properly or understand, Anyone have any ideas what I could try? Although as I said I use the tablet 90% of the time, I do need the laptop for the dvd drive. Thanks in advance.

Try starting in safe mode, tap f8 whilst booting.
If that works, back everything up and would suggest creating a new user account. Login to that out of safe mode. Check graphics drivers ok, run an sfc /scannow from a command prompt to check for file corruption.

Or try unplugging any external USB devices before booting up.

Thanks for the replies guys, I forgot to mention that with regard to computers I am a 74 year old complete novice( read numpty) I understand the first part of the reply re. booting in safe mode while tapping f8, but I'm afraid the rest escapes me,
Cheers, Ken

I had a similar problem with one of my laptops and I found that if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del,clicked log off and then signed back in it would work fine.

Sorry, forgot to update this thread, I sorted the black screen problem by starting in safe mode and eventually managed to get system restore to go back to an earlier time,
Thanks for your help
Ken

backup your stuff and get an upgrade or something done :-)

Vista is sooooo dead

I had been intending to upgrade to Windows 7, but following advise on here I am trying to ascertain if my laptop will allow me to upgrade to 8.1 or 10. I don't have anything on there that I need to back up, I know I'll be told to get a new laptop rather than trying to upgrade a 7 year old model, but I just don't have the funds and I'm trying to improve the least expensive way.

Clone your present drive to a 120Gb SSD in it and leave the rest as is!

if your pc will run vista it would run W8/10 ok from a resource point of view, it more depends on drivers etc.
