Bought an old Minolta lens on ebay with a sticky focus ring (was sold as such, seller's description was honest, he said it had been used on the beach and it was probably sand in the mechanism). Played with it a bit and decided that while it worked and I liked the output, I couldn't live with it as was.
Took it in to Black on white and the chap in the shop had a play and said it might be grit inside or it might be a fault with the mechanism itself. He said he could dismantle it to inspect and gave me a price to do that (£40+VAT), warning me that they were busy and it would be a while (weeks rather than days).
Got it back today (five weeks later), cleaned and tested. Apparently it was full of sand, they had stripped it, cleaned everything and re-assembled it and all for the price quoted to dismantle it and it came with a six month guarantee on the work done. Very pleased, would recommend them for their work, provided that you don't need fast turnaround.
Lens is an alpha-mount Minolta 17-35/3.5, for reference, which is not one that Sony re-introduced after their takeover so I didn't even consider contacting Sony in this instance.
