Please discuss why so many people like black things. Black cars and bikes in particular. Surely we should favour safety and visibility over "style"?

I am in fact one of those people. In my case I simply bought what was out there without thinking too much. Well I regret that a lot since careless pensioners just love my black rear bumper. "I was blinded by the sun", "I didn't see it" and not even an honest apology. c***s. Some arseholes even ignore my car on the motorway changing lanes however I learned to spot them early enough. It never happened with previous silver car and driving style didn't change or even got more gentle. On a more practical side mine looks very dusty and dirty even after a couple of days. That makes it even less visible. So what is so trendy and desirable about black?

I'm probably ordering high vis chevron rear kit for mine until I dispose of it due to horrid black colour. What do you think? Is there anything I can do for the sides too without damaging the paint work? I may as well then get a skull and crossbones sticker for the bonnet too :lol:

I promise next one will be a large tough SUV in white, silver, red or light blue. If they rear end me they will end up with a wreck, not me. Tow bar will get ordered too for that reason alone.
 
When clean and polished black looks much 'shinier' than anything else. Of course it doesn't last long,but the proliferation of Eastern European handwashes sorts that out. Black also shows up all the dents and scratches worse than other colours, so I wouldn't have one again.

Black cars look great when polished. When I bought my black Mondeo ST it certainly didn't go unnoticed. Vehicles were always quite wary incase it was an unmarked police car. It was funny to see an instant change in peoples driving as soon as they saw the car.

5 series in the midlands and south always freak me out. Many of them are police cars.

Far better than this turd brown that seems to be in vogue at the moment that's for sure ;)

Oh and black, dark blue, BRG looks really nice once its shined up a little :thumbs:
 
My last car was black.
I loved it.
I'd have another black one in a heartbeat.
 
I had a BMW Carbon Black 5 series and was a pig to keep clean but did look lovely when it was clean Pic Below.

Nearly bought one recently (Java as VW call it) as the price kept dropping, but it really was an awful colour when you saw it up close and I thought I might never get rid of it again.

My current car is black (with tiny blue sparkly bits) my last car was red and was pretty much ignored by everyone else on the road, not the case with my current car. Last car was a Fiat Panda, current car [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] orf big SUV stylee... size matters colour doesn't. :)

Oh I dunno my Izusu crew cab in dark green ( environmentally friendly colour of course :D)
is often ignored especially while driving around early hours of the morning.

No way ........I would definitely pay the extra for the colour I wanted even if it was a few hundred quid , but I guess I must be one of the mad millions:)
 
Red is great at hiding dirt, my car always seems to be shining no matter how little I wash it! It is of course a b****r to keep it red, and idiots still seem to find it invisible.

I didn't actually want a red one, but it's a stupidly rare car so when a rust free manual came along I didn't even go and see it - I bought it over the phone an had it delivered!
 
Black is the best. If I ever invested in a classic car it would have to be black.
 
The Royal Enfield is black and I chose that since it looked much better than the other options. Current car is Vapour Grey and was chosen from the selection available on the colour way (including interior) and the level of extras the original owner had loaded it with. Still think it's the best colour for the car, although the SportBrake (OK, estate!) looks good in almost all the colours it's available in, especially Caviar...)
 
Black is my least fave colour, i think of it as the colour of death. I only own black work trousers thats it.
As a keen cyclist and motorcyclist i just wonder at folk on the road head to toe in black.
 
To paraphrase H.G.Wells "In the country of the brightly coloured cars the black car is most noticeable" :)

Well for years black was the only colour available for M/Cycle leathers and I guess it became a tradition ;)

As for the fashion of multi coloured Lycra I have my own theory :D
 
Mercedes used to publish a list of how easy it was to see the colours of the cars they produced ....... some kind of perception index .... I think that dark green was the bottom of the list, but black was also down there as well

I have always liked black cars and black BMW Bikes, (I still have a 1984 R80)

I bought one of the last SAAB 9 3 Aero Convertibles which I use in the summer ..... it is a lovely car and I have always been a SAAB turbo fan

Also we still have "my" Black 911 which is now with my son to keep his Black BM 320 happy and my daughter has a Black Audi A5 convertible

You just have to keep them reasonable clean, (or not), ........ and to answer your question people just like Black cars and they seem always in "fashion" or whatever the word is

It is Rhinefield House in the New Forest - my son got married there three weeks ago

The sun came out, but on the next day we had torrential rain all day ......... they were lucky

Back to France tomorrow morning early , which will be good

(my daughter got married two months ago ....... so it's been hectic)

No way would I allow them to clean my car, especially if it was black I prefer to keep the paintwork as scratch free as possible.

Cars should be kept dent and scratch free!

I love Black, keep it very clean or very dirty.

I would hate to constantly worry about the odd dent or scratch! For me a car is simply a "tool" for getting me from A to B in the same way that my camera is simply a "tool" for taking photos and the odd bit of brassing would not worry me.
 
I remember getting a quote on a golf gti convertible once. They asked me the colour which was black the price went up quite a bit.
 
I guess that's one way to look at it but for me I take pride in it and that's how I would enjoy it most. Same with watches etc.

I don't have to worry about my car getting dented or scratched, I never park it where it is likely to get scratched or dented.

I remember selling a car to an elderly couple, who upon choosing their colour said, "anything but green........as it blends in with the bushes and trees!!!!" I found hard not sniggering a little at this :D

It amazes me how with a plethora of larger spaces, people always decide to park next to mine. No matter how I try (even tried parking the furthest from the door), some b*****d always parks next to me leaving as little space as possible to open the door!
 
Had lots of black cars over the years & they have all been a nightmare to keep clean however when I was younger my father said it would save on a coffin when I killed myself driving like a lunatic :(

Same here.
Myself & my moneyboss discussed this some time ago, it tends to be in the main, women. (her observation, not mine)
It's either old biddies who can barely see over the steering wheel, or young uns who can't judge the width of their cars. :rolleyes:
