Good to see the Mods on the case, but a bit sad that so much vitriol was present in the first place...

I guess just because we all like taking photos, that doesn't automatically make us good people...
 
Couldn't sleep last night so I was following the thread
though I largely stayed out of it.
I couldn't believe how restrained the adminnies were!
There were several cringe moments waiting for the ban / suspension hammer
to fall

 
There've been several threads recently that have had to be closed because some posters can't restrain themselves, tpf has been very successful at keeping the louts out, or at least well behaved and I suspect (hope) that some major head knocking is going on in private.
 
This is the first time I've had a chance to read TPF today. And I feel sick -

I feel sick that the MJ fan-boys won't allow others to hold a contrary viewpoint.

I feel sick that some are comparing him to Lennon.

I feel sick that some are denying that he had serious 'issues'. I'm sure that the truth will out in the not too distant future - now MJ won't to sueing for libel.

I feel sick that a former mod can insult members and get away with it.

Sick.

After last night's shenanigans and a few others over the last year, I might be inclined to agree with him though

Although I'd say some of them not all :) Me being one of them sometimes

but then again, a lot of people say I'm not a photographer :D

No I think he's about right...most photographers I know are total Wayne Kerrs...
A lot (of men for the most part) use photography as a thinly-veiled excuse to disguise other activities, some less than savoury...

One only has to visit a typical Camera-Club to see what I'm on about...

That thread was pretty bad, I said some things too that probably inflamed things a little bit.
 
What was worse was that people got flamed for expressing an opinion...
Right or wrong, Forums like this exist in part for us to express ourselves without fear of intimidation or ridicule (well for the most part anyway...lol)...

Whatever our opinions of his music, the fact exists that the man was deeply flawed and to be flamed for saying that is outrageous IMO...
 
I'd agree, problem is though, this is one of the problems with the internet, there's a level of social interaction missing which makes it easier for people to say things that they normally wouldn't in an everyday face to face conversation.

'twas a very good debate but like a lot of emotive subjects,
when it starts to personal it goes tits up very quickly :(
 
One thing I have noticed is that there's always a thread like that every few weeks where people just vent. I kind of think that's a good thing as long as it's controlled. I don't think the thread should have been locked earlier than it was, the timing was probably perfect on that. The dust always settles on these threads and in a day or two we'll all be back to normal.

Personally I need to try and keep out of internet arguments.

highly emotive topics do cause arguments. My main problem with the thread was not past history, musical taste or even people go at each other, it is the fact that, like it or not, someone has died and a respectful thread was what it should have been. Several people lowered themselves in my estimation, a couple have been suspended, and a lot of PMs have and will be sent with metophorical slaps in them. The reaction has been the same as the Jade thread, sadly some folk just dont get exactly what its all about.

The moderators and admin do the best we can, personally i would have taken a few more people out for the day but we discuss these things and decide on a sensible basis, not a pitchfork-wielding mob basis. Not many people reported many posts, quite a lot got deleted and a few more will later when i can sit down and do it without the phone ringing in the office. REPORT the posts you dont like, dont ****ing bitch and moan if you havent.

Final word, dont lets turn this thread into another slanging match, my patience threshold was passed a long time ago, and I WILL ban people for getting ******. Consider this a friendly warning.
 
ps, the swear filter stars out partial words, so stop moaning about that, send us a Contact Us instead and we will look at the filter

I really wonder if threads completely unrelated to photography have a place on this forum at all. Why have an 'out of focus' forum at all? There are other places on the net to discuss these things if that's what you want to do.

That's the sort of comment I'd like to see tackled by the mods. If it were said as part of friendly banter then fine, but it isn't.

It was obviously meant as a humourous post and I'm not sure why you think it wasn't.
