Black flashes on subject.

Not sure if i am allowed to post this problem here but heres hoping i can get some help.


I have a AF-S nikkor 40mm macro lens. When i take a shot with it attached to my D5100 i get black flashes when viewed in the LCD, i tried the lens on my other camera a D3000 and its fine. I tried my 18-55mm on my D5100 and that is fine. Has anyone had any experience of this.

What you're seeing is 'blinkies' - your camera is set up to blink black/white any part of the image that is completely white - i.e. is completely over-exposed - a 'blown highlight'.

I don't know your lenses, or your camera settings but maybe the 18-55mm lens won't stop down as far as the selected aperture on your camera but the 40mm will - causing the image with the 40mm lens to be over-exposed.
 
What Adrian said. It's nothing to do with the lens and covered in your manual.

I have found out what was wrong.

I had to deselect Highlights in the playback menu.

But they're telling you that you've got blown highlights. Turning them off doesn't stop the highlights blowing it just stops you knowing you have
 
You are over exposing your highlights. How are you metering?
