Black Background

Trying to put something together for the still life comp. What should i use to get a perfectly black background. I have never done this type of photography before so any pointers would be appreciated.
 
Leave the lens cap on :D
 
Seriously tho...

What you need is a black sheet about 2-3 foot behind the subject.
Make sure that the lighting is not directed too far back.
Dont use flash.

Use a DOF that doesnt extend past the back of the subject.

Then you can fettle in PP if you need to
 
I usualy use a piece of A1 size black mountboard and then what Oldgit said.
 
Velour (sp?) or velvet absorb the most amount of light if you're trying to get the deepest darkest look possible. :)
 
Velvet is best for non- reflectance -you'll just have to be careful as every bit of dust and crap tends to stick to it, so keep it well brushed

If you expose for the subject (taking it that it's lighter than black) the background should still come out black even using flash. I've used some A1 mount board and took some portraits of my neice (using the 580 ex flash) and the background came out almost black A little levels tweak in PS and it was sorted.
 
I've been experimenting with the black cloth that you use to stop weeds in the garden, seems to look ok :)
