I got woken up about 15 minutes ago with the chickens making a hell of a racket - a lot more than is usual and very loud. As I unlocked the back door and stepped out a fox leapt over the chicken run and scarpered up the garden. It was absolute carnage in there with a couple of the girls dead and another I had to despatch as she was in such a bad way.

I wouldn't mind so much if it took just the one to feed but it's the wanton killing that p*sses me off.

Sorry to hear this Colin :(

Can't stop thousands of years of animal instict with a fence. Will it put the others off laying at all?

It probably will for a couple of days. the annoying is that this was in daylight, I thought they usually struck at night.

I'll see you in a few hours!

Roast chicken anyone?

I'll see your chickens and raise you a deer from yesterday :(

One of the women here was out for a hack with her dogs, a young deer crossed in front of them and the whippet and JR surprisingly took it down but didn't kill it. I had to go put it out of it's misery :(

This time of year when they may have young they can strike at any time. I know from experience too. We shut the hens up at night but you can't really protect them in daylight. Nature at work I guess. :(

Sorry to here about this. It used to be the same when I lived on the farm as a yoof, a couple of times they got into my granny's chicken run and caused mayhem. Like you said kill and take one or two, but not wipe out so many for one. I always thought that went against nature, by using up so much energy for a little return and wiping out a future food source.

Yep I agree 110% Colin

And of course if anyone reports that she can be prosecuted for "hunting with dogs" under the "recent law" that banned fox hunting

your kidding, surely

no she can't - not with just two dogs.

we gave up keeping poultry over this, we lost so many to foxes. They were visiting during the day in small gangs and it was beyond a joke.

we had a number of them shot but there were always more to come back. I don't mind if I've forgotten to put the birds away at night but daylight raids are very wearing.

We lost sixty birds in one week, mixture of ducks and hens, with the remaining birds being traumatised by the experience. (the ducks, I'm not sure the chickens are so bright)

It isn't wanton killing though. The idea is to kill while the birds are available. in a natural setting they would bury the birds not immediately required ready for later use, but we tend to clear up after them.

yes she can
its perfectly legel to "run" two dogs ( anyone "walking 3 can also be proscecuted as an intent) to flush for guns but if the dog (s) brings down the quarry thats hunting with dogs.

edit, just "remembered" the location thats under English law not sure if Scottish law is the same

Sorry to hear about your loss. Surprised how many chicken owners on here.

I'm lucky that we don't get foxes in the garden here (even though neighvours see them and it's quite rural), I guess having two huge dogs puts them off a bit!

It looks like we are going to lose another, I think she was injured during the raid and she is going downhill so I've been told to take her to the vets tomorrow.

Thanks karlotta. My two lazy, good for nothing bastids slept through the whole lot. :shake:

I really like foxes, they are such cute ,cuddly, fluffy animals,I like them nearly as much as I like MInk.............:D

Old Trick..... bury the bodies in a shallow grave... Mr Fox will return for them, and if you are in possesion of a shotgun you can dispatch him..... I know this works, been there, done that!
Good Luck.

Loads of foxes where I am. The only garden they go into is the one where a woman keeps hens !!
Landowner buys 2000 pheasant poults every year half of which end up running wild at the end of the shooting season so it's hardly surprising there are lots of foxes.

Me and a couple of friends go lamping for foxes regularly at this time of year, I have no sympathy for them at all. The amount of damage and carnage they cause is quite unbelievable.

Really sorry to hear that Colin. Having lost a cat to a local fox, I know what an absolute Pain in the ass they can be, though amazed it didn't disturb the terriers, it was the noise from the dogs going bananas that alerted us to trouble outside when the [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] struck. :bat:

Misguided people feed them and when they get used to food they cease to fear humans and can become aggressive if they subsequently don't get fed.

Pine Martens are spreading towards here now. That'll spell trouble for the pheasants.
