I received a letter from them this morning quoting that I owed them £???? from beleive it or not back 2003-04 .I phoned them and was informed there was nothing on the system but was told to phone payments department to confirm this and was promptly told I did owe this amount. :shrug:They are now sending out a dispute form to fill in b ut does anyone know where I stand in regards to this now.
:help: I,m totally lost

Depends. Do you think you owe it?
You need to make sure you get down on paper all your earnings and entitlements for the year, then make sure it tallies up with what they have on their system.

They haven't got a clue what they're doing so i'd ask them to prove you owe it before just sending it off.

when tax credits 1st started they paid £3000 into my account , I rand and told them it wasn't mine, 3 weeks later it was still there so i rang again , a few days later I got a letter saying to avoid undue hardship I could keep the money and they'd stop the child benefit until it was paid off, i'll be about 60 I think :D

They are a nightmare. A friend of mine last year ended up paying over £2000 back to them.Even though the so called 'top man' of the department had told him that he didn't owe them anything.
A letter arrived in the post demanding money back. He phoned them and explained what he had been told. The reply he got was "if you don't pay within 7 days we will send in the bailiffs!"
Poor sods stress levels went through the roof. He had to pay in the end.

Kev.

Have you always told the truth when submitting your earnings?

can you prove this?

if so you will be fine just photo copy it all and send it off.

If a porky has been told or you did not tell them something then its your own fault.

I have never had any bother from them.

What miffs me off is I have been in a relationship with Eileen for 3 yrs and this arrives from her bloody ex who by the way is a conman type

I would dispute it from so long ago, have heard many stories of them letting you off.

I had always kept them informed on changes .They shouldn,t be allowed to terrorize people like this .I know I dont owe them money so will fight every way I can.

If you have been totally honest with them then 'you go girl' and give them h*ll

We have just finished paying back an over payment due to their cockup of 2.5k all because when I started my job 4 years ago the bloke at teh end of the phone ticked a wrong box and they didnot send out a check your details form.:shake: They stood by their guns and have been taking the money back eversince, just had notification that we have paid it all now. I hate the way they work.

That won't have much, if anything, to do with it.

babytiger - As per the advice above, as long as you can prove income, earnings, etc. that's all you need to do.

Are you sure about that advice?

There are many cases (inc some in this thread) where the person has done nothing wrong.. its a mistake by the tax credit people.. there fault.... but you still have to pay it back no matter whos fault it is... I dont think being in the right lets you keep any over payment ...

It may do. See link I have posted above.

Tax credits office record all phone calls and they are stored under the N.I number so incase of disputes they can get the call history.
These should be kept for 6 years.

This is the reason I do all my updating with them by telephone and not via the post, and If I havent had my new change of circumstances form back within 2 weeks I call them back to chase it.

and do you think on their previous form they'll ever find it again

where as with post you can keep a handy copy of everything you send them. Any financial stuff whatsoever is in writting only - then there can be no arguement about what was said
