I purely only use my camera 90% of the time to take trophy shots when fishing I have a eos750 d with a 50mm lens, I was reasonably happy with the set up until a friend tool some pics for me with his rod 750d but with a 24/70 f4 attached and I was fin smacked with the results, I am thinking of getting the same lens, I don't have a problem with the cost but my.main question is... is it overkill ? Is there somthing better ? That will either save money or do a better job for around the same money ?
 
50mm F/1.8? Cheap as chips, nice and fast, will blur background nicely and sharp?
 
I think you should try and pin down what makes your friends pictures better.

Your 50mm should give you the option of shooting at wider apertures than can be matched by the zoom but once your at f5.6 and smaller apertures the results should be pretty much indistinguishable. Maybe :D So I wonder what makes your friends pictures better? Is it the field of view? The perspective? Are they sharper?

Could you post examples?

First you need to find out whether it was the camera and lens he used, or just the settings, which you could duplicate on your gear, or the computer processing of the images and not the gear at all, computer image processing can make a HUGE difference.
 
A PS to my post above.

Regardless... I wouldn't recommend a 24-70mm f4 lens to anyone with an APS-C camera. IMO the lens to choose would be a 18-50mm f2.8 or at least a FF f2.8 zoom. A 24-70mm f4 just wouldn't be on my radar if I had a Canon APS-C DSLR.
 
i never knew there was a 24/70 f4 (do now)

regardless.. i am guessing it wasn't his lens that made the picture so much better as the 50mm you have is a good sharp lens with far better dof capabilities than his lens...

I think you should compare technique (shooting and/or PP) not lens :)

The 50mm should be able to produce nicer looking images than the zoom lens imo, you have a much greater ability to blur the background and make your 'trophies' really pop.

You're comparing apples with pears...

It's easy to think it's about the gear, but what do your mate's own trophy shots look like? It's a lot easier to get a great shot when the idiot is still attached to the camera, I think I'd struggle to take a great selfie and I'm confidant in my photographic ability. Using a camera remotely is a tricky technique.

If your mate is taking great trophy shots, buy him a beer and pick his brains.
