Bit of a dumb question

I know, it's a bit of a dumb question, but I was wondering if anyone has an idea of the space one raw picture takes up on a card in a Canon 7D?

I'm gonna pick up the camera tomorrow and as the shop where I need to pick it up doesn't sell memory cards, I'm gonna get one today (my current camera uses SD cards, so have no CF cards yet). And I was wondering if a 4GB would get me a decent start (birthday is this weekend and I know I'll be getting two extra 4GB cards on Sunday). I don't want to get caught out without a memory card over the weekend :), but I don't want to pressure hubby in getting me 100's of euros of cards either, as I didn't tell that the new camera would need a lot of new memory cards as well :D

not sure on 7D but but it shouldnt differ much, my 450D takes up about 14-15mb each picture in raw.

So the 7D might be a lil more due to the 18mp over my 12mp

There are no dumb questions if you don't know the answer... :D

7D File Sizes

JPEG
(1) Large: Approx. 17.90 Megapixels (5,184 x 3,456) = 6-12MB
(2) Medium: Approx. 8.00 Megapixels (3,456 x 2,304)
(3) Small: Approx. 4.50 Megapixels (2,592 x 1,728)
RAW
(4) RAW: Approx. 17.90 Megapixels (5,184 x 3,456) = 17-22MB*
(5) M-RAW: Approx. 10.10 Megapixels (3,888 x 2,592)
(6) S-RAW: Approx. 4.50 Megapixels (2,592 x 1,728)

  • RAW - Should be aprox. 17-22MB*
  • M-RAW - Should be aprox 1/2-2/3 the size of RAW
  • S-RAW - Should be aprox. 1/3-1/2 the size of RAW
  • Exact file sizes depend on the subject, ISO speed, Picture Style, etc.

Thanks, so a quick calculation tells me that a 4Gb card should go for only about 180 pics (allowing some space for card functioning). So have to get additional card space!

I get just over 140 raw shots on a 4gig card on my 7D.

As said no question is a dumb question if you dont know the answer. That the beauty of TP! Ask and you will get answers

My 7D eats about 25mb per RAW file, give or take. My 8GB card holds about 360 raws so your calculation is about right

Oh and if you value your card space, get a BIG ONE if you intend to shoot some video!

I have just tried my spare 2gb card in my 7d and it tells me I can get 62 shots at raw so you can double it for a four gb

So

124 on raw
208 on mraw
264 on sraw

458 on large jpeg
918 on course large jpeg
892 on fine med jpeg
1820 on course med jpeg
1448 on fine small jpeg

I would advise buying a good card that has a fast transfer rate especially if you want to shoot video or many frames in rapid succesion.

I use sandisk extreme III with no problems.

Not really planning on shooting a lot of video, but will get 4GB and 8GB card. That plus the two I'll get this weekend, will get me some space to work on. I was thinking of getting the Sandisk Extreme Cards. The Pro is a bit over the top for what I will need.

Thanks for all the advice. Now it's just a wait untill I get my hands on that lovely camera...
