What is the best pocket guide book to take along for identification when photographing birds.
I have just had a look at a book published by Readers Digest which looked ok but on looking at Amazon there seems to be a very wide choice.

Been an RSPB member for years and have dozens of books. The two I use most are the ones in the link posted by Lammie. I have the full size Collins book not the smaller paperback. It is by far the best bird book I've got.

I recently got an RSPB book for a tenner from some folk who sell things round businesses etc. It's about on a par with the Collins one but not quite as good. Don't have it at home so can't give you the correct name for it. Sorry.

Collins paperback for me too. Has taken over from the old Heinzel/Fitter guide.

Cheers for that, looks like I can't go wrong if I get both the Collins and the Peter Hayman books and then I will save on delivery from Amazon:thumbs:

Both brilliant books linked by Lammie ... ... I have two of the Mitchell Beazley in older editions and a hardback of the Collins book ... :D

Collected bird books for years and have all sorts going back to some early ones where the drawings are quite comical through to the Observers Book that started me off just a couple of years ago ...

:p

I have the large Mitchell Hayman book titled "Bird" which also has an iPod CD-Rom, which I've installed on my laptop, for taking to the nature reserves with me.

Also have a rather large definitive guide to the Wildlife of Britain by the RSPB and both books are excellent, but obviously too large for portable viewing.

On the smaller books, the Collins guide seems to be excellent, comes with a book jacket

I use the Kingfisherfield guides, Birds of Britain & Europe,
by John Gooders. It covers just about everything you will need.
