I know the photos are pants, and that one is a red kite, but is the black bird a crow or a raven? I thought crow while watching but someone on a fishing forum asked if it was a raven, and I can see what they mean now. TIA

Looks more like a rook than a raven to me - ravens' beaks are much bulkier than it would appear than the bird in the shot(s) has

To be fair you don't usually see rooks alone and aren't as aggressive as crows. I'll go crow. Tail is wrong for raven.

Having taken a much closer look and done some comparisons, I have to admit it seems I was wrong. :sorry:

I was with Simon on the grey beak, but the downward curved shape of the beak looks more like a crow and so does the head vs beak size ratio. The Rooks' beak is much bigger. Also, Crows appear IME to be the ones that attack and hassle Buzzards and Kites the most.

Sorry Dave, I screwed up. Next time, take a better picture . . . ;)

I suppose I should have given a location because the edge of Pennine moorland isn't where I'd expect to see rooks but I can see where the rook ID is coming from. At the time I was pretty sure it was a crow, and only the raven suggestion made me ask for a second opinion.

I have no excuses for the poor photo other than ineptitude. :(
