I saw this on one of the information screens on the motorway this weekend.

"Bin Your Litter. Other people do"

It struck me as rather odd.

1. Since when did the motorway start giving out general life advice
2. Are they telling me that other people bin my litter when I don't, or are they telling me that other people bin their own litter
3. When did the motorway start using guilt tactics to try and get you to do stuff
4. How do they know I'm not one of the "other people" in the first place
5. Why does other people doing things automatically mean that it is a good thing and that I should do what other people do. Other people do lots of things I don't - it's not a given that the things they do are good. Other people also smoke or take drugs - should I do that too since they do?

So whats that all about?

I pass through a couple of villages on a regular basis which have roadside signs saying a simlar thing.

Nanny State

there have been signs telling you to bin your litter on the side of public trash cans for years.

people shoudnt need telling but unfortunately a lot do.

How do you think this particular one is working out neil - the one you see as you are driving 70mph on the motor way I mean? :-)

I am only guessing here, but they are probably asking you to keep your rubbish in your car until you reach your destination, not asking you to try and lob it into rubbish bin at 70mph.

I think some of you guys are missing the subtle point here.

It's not the "Bin your litter" that makes this odd. It's the "Other people do" part thats just weird.

I think you need to do what it tells you......................'Other people do'

:p:D

Here's some other ideas they could run with:

Pay your taxes. Other people do
Watch your calories. Other people do
Read a book. Other people do

it has the potential to turn into quite a funny meme

:)

Personally i'd like to see the finger sign or a t'ssr image flash up at all the idiots:D

There's some talk about solving the pension crisis by pointing out that "other people" save for their retirement and that they have a better life because of it.

Which kind of shows you how deep the mess we are in is.

I think they may not be delivering the message in the best fashion, but the intent is worthy.
Don't be a dyk. Keep your crap in the car until you get home and put it in your own bin instead of simply turfing it out of the window of the car.
If you do that already, then ignore the signs and lighten up.

It's good to know at least somebody gets this :-)

theres ample evidence that 'nag' signs don't work anyway - if someone is going to drop litter they are going to drop litter regardless of how many signs tell them not to,

I don't bin my litter. I chuck it in the back seat. Do other people do this?

(and yes, i'm a minger but it does eventually get cleared out)

The body responsible for the content displayed on gantry signs is the same body that has to send people out walking along the hard shoulders (which is an increadibly dangerous place to be out for a stroll) to pick up all the rubbish that people chuck out of their windows. If people didn't act so carelessly, workes wouldn't have to be put in harms way so often. They are probably much less interested in how fat car drivers are.

As for the actual wording. It needs to be short and sweett to not be distracting, plus they are goverened by rules, similar to those on this forum, that restricts what they probably really like to say. Otherwide, the sign would probably read

STOP BEING A c***.

lol

i think you're over thinking this.

NOT ARF

LOL

I hardly ever believe the gantry signs these days - they are so often on without any cause, I was told I should just adhere to the instruction as I dont know the bigger picture of the network and they may be just slowing traffic down to assist in a junction congestion ahead....maybe. So I generally do as Im told But Ive almost had a bad accident by slowing to 50 when the truck drivers dont seem to want to slow the momentum they have for anything other than a blue light......

Either we all adhere or we are every man for him / her self! you cant have it both ways...or there is confusion and accidents .....

I still see people just open there car doors and sump rubbish, even when sat at traffic lights, some folk are just not interested in that avenuee of life.
Usually the same folk who have filthy dirty houses and piles of crap in there garden.

Why is it smokers seem to think fag ends aren't litter and just chuck them out of their cars?

I saw the same motorway sign on Saturday, and I too thought that the wording was a bit odd. So no, you're not the only one who thought it!

My dog rides in the back seat and doesnt like having rubbish thrown at her so I chuck mine in the passanger footwell instead

"They" could have solved it by not introducing the raid on money purchase pensions in the 1997 budget. My uncle retired just after it and the value of his annuity was down 1/3rd from what was anticipated a few months previously. But, things can only get better, as the slogan of the era went. Or something.

A lot of people that might have been considering starting a private pension will have been scared off, wondering what else would change in the legislative framework.

Howabout " Don't take your eyes ff the road to look at pointless signs while driving, other people don't "

One the other day said "take extra care when towing".

I've never been so insulted in all my life.......

Thee was one on the m5 last week " is your car ready for winter ?" umm, its april

It could be argued that judging by the amount of conversation that the message is generating here and perhaps elsewhere, the message is working and we might just think before throwing litter out of the car - job done!

Yeah, but the M5 goes to Wales, right?

Well it does technically past wales - the M4 , M50, or M57 go to wales, but i was heading south between J30 and J31

True but its preaching to the choir, the people who notice and talk about it werent about to hurl litter out of their car window anyway
