bigsteve's 52 for 2010 Week 8 "Mechanical"

Hi Steve,

Catch up time for me.
I missed your poetry week and I only got my week 3 shot in this morning, so I'm just having a look at the others now.

Poetry : :love: Stunning shot. Lovely clarity in the ice, beautiful blue sky as a backdrop and I love the single drop falling down against the blue. Really good week for you.

Chopped : It is really nice to see a totally different take on the theme. I think it's the only one I've seen with a person in it and a great story behind it to put it in context.
I hope that chunk of wood didn't hit you!
This shot has a real 3D feel to it. I can almost feel it flying out of the screen.
Great timing too to catch it at just that precise moment in time :thumbs:

EXcellent image Steve, that chunk of wood looks dangerous and his face says it all. Did you have to duck quick ?
 
Nah, didn't even know it was coming. I was that tensed over the shutter button that I missed the noise, and it was pure fluke that I got what I did. :lol:

It missed me anyway! :thumbs:
 
Nice shots so far (I'm a little behind with my comments!). I like your first shot more than week 2 and 3, although none of them are bad, by any means

Steve, my favourite from the set is the man with the pipe with his little lady friend. Love the contrast in sizes between them. :)
 
what a great set steve.. I havent had to bottle to ask people if I can take their photo.. was on a local canal today where a guy was fishing.. would have been perfect in the setting.. but wussed out :(

fair play to the policeman, is a good portrait of him too.. agree with Dean, I love 'vernon' and his friend.. look great characters!

Great entry for street. Love the fact its an everyday situation captured without them noticing. Big brother at its best lol :thumbs: good stuff!

Did you try cropping out the space at the top of the frame to see what that looks like?

Week 2 Love the blue sky, sets off the icicles perfectly.

Week 3 Well caught piece of action, great expression on the face.

Week 4 Nicely caught candid street shot, suits the mono and the arches in the background.

Yes, but it loses the arches that give the picture its perspective.
I prefer it as it is. :)
 
I think you have been clocked but they're just trying to pretend you're not there. Nice shot for week 4. Agree the arches give it perspective and keeping the street sign in there adds a little too.

This is a great set, just read your blog. I was round the library on Tuesday and Wednesday and ended up bottling it. Loads of pictures at Great Northern though, not quite the same.

Have to agree with others... some good stuff for week. Personally I bottled out and opted for 'a street', rather than street, so have to tip my hat to you for not taking the soft option. :thumbs:

I really do love the shot that you chose. Please don't take this as a negative, but I'm not a huge fan of people shots and the beautiful arches in this one really add a nice bit of interest for me.
I really like the way that it's composed with the couple in the foreground. They add perspective to the shot without dominating it . . . probably not strictly what "street" photography is about but spot on for me :thumbs:

Steve - I really take my hat off to you for getting out and grabbing Street photography by the throat!! You've got a set of photos to be proud of and the one you've posted for the 52 is, in fct, my favourite. I love the way the grand architecture of a great building dwarfs the couple passing by, but they are engrossed in their conversation and obliviou to the architecture. Mono treatment suits the images, too - especially since it was such a rotten, grey day.

I look forward to seeing lot more!

You have a great set of images there - well done. I think I agree with your first choice but I also love the one of "Vernon" and his lady friend, and the umbrella dance one.

Full marks for persisting in the face of discouragement - it has really paid off. The B/W conversions are excellent and the composition of my three picks are very good.

Great snap for Street. They look like they're the only people around which would have made me far to nervous to train my camera on them because there would have been no way of pretending you were snapping something else.
 
I don't usually go a bundle on explaining my pictures, but this week I just thought I'd mention that since the theme is 'Speed' I got my entry in quickly, the (simulated) subject matter is speed, and the processing implies it was taken using a fast film.

A few people have asked about this, the lady was really small but they were both really friendly. :)

Excellent! I was contemplating how to represent this sort of speed, but you've done such a great job I shall concentrate my efforts elsewhere. Soopa! :D

Steve, I love your choice for street... Like Sarah, I'm not one for shooting people, but the long line of arches really work well with the couple walking there.

Speed, an interesting take on the theme... It works well, and is way outside the box ... good work.
