Yes
hey all,
I'm looking to get myself a bigger lens for my new nikon d5200, but not sure what will be best? I will be taking my photos from the wrong side of the fence so will need a good zoom, but whats best a 200mm lens with a x2 Teleconverter or a 300mm lens on its own? I only have about £250 (due to other hobbies :() so rather than buying both i'd just get one and if sneed be buy a convertor later? also are Teleconverter any good or do you lose a bit of the quality, does anyone use one?
cheers colin

you lose a lot of quality with a x2 converted
you also loose 2 stops of light
so if your 200mm is f5.6 it becomes f11

and a 400mm f11 is pretty useless.
so depends on how good, and how fast your 200mm is- and what's the 300mm you're looking at

that makes sense about the teleconverter it seemed to good to be true :)

this was the first one i was looking at.
Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR £209.99
plus this one
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR £287.99

both second hand from london camera exchange fareham

looks like you got some good results with it, does it have auto-focus? its just my nikon d5200 doesn't have the motor in it so the lens needs to have it, if you get what i mean :)

Yes it has auto-focus, I've used it for a year for karting shots and it is a great lens (see avatar), although I'm upgrading now, I'll probably keep it as a reliable back up. You can pick them up on eBay for around £200 with box and everything.

Of the 2, the 70-300 is supposed to be better. Pretty sure they've always been AF-S so suitable for all AF Nikons, including bodies lacking the AF motor.

how come its better tho the other has got DX in its name? :)

The DX lenses are designed to be used on 'DX' camera bodies such as your D5200, they are not designed for the more expensive 'FX' full frame bodied cameras such as the D610/D800 etc.
The 70-300 VRII can be used on both types of bodies, hence the higher price and lift in quality.

ahh that makes sense now, thanks :) looks like i'll had to save up a bit :)

I went for the 55-300 as I mostly shoot wider and couldn't justify the extra for occassional use. But I have to say I've been really impressed with the results whenever I use it (on a D5100) and the extra range at the wide end means you need to carry fewer lenses and swap less. If you don't mind grey import they can be had new for around £180.

The 70-300 probably makes more sense if you plan to go full frame at some point and probably has the edge IQ wise but I wouldn't dismiss the 55-300 completely.

Yes the 70-300 VR is the one that you want, I will have mine up for sale in around a month's time with a hood if you was still looking then, for around the same price.

thanks for your help, how much you looking for yours? the only thing is im looking to get one within the next two weeks
