Yes
will the canon 100 400 lens drag more power from my battery's on my 50d if so can i get better battery's ?

I would guess that the heavier the glass, the more power is required to move the focussing elements. It also has IS which will take power. Just get a second battery and/or a grip. Nothing to worry about really.

I have used the 100 - 400 all day on my 20d with grip and never had an issue, As said above just get a spare.

When I had a 100-400 I used it all day with the grip and still had power to spare. I did notice batteries went down a little quicker but nothing major.

:agree: The extra power usage isn't anything drastic, or that you would notice unless you were purposely taking note!

I had heard a few years ago, that some of the prosumer cameras wouldn't operate big lenses properly (really big lenses, 500 f4 and bigger), because of the power requirements.

This was back in the day though, 4 or 5 years ago, and I'm sure the technology has improved!
