My PC updated to the latest version of Windows 10 - 2004 last night and so far it appears faster. The only problem is I seem to have lost over 8GB of memory, does this sound right?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Just looked in Storage and under Temporary Files, Previous Windows Installation(s) there is 31.3GB and wondered if that was anything to do with the storage loss.

Do you mean memory or storage?
Very strange if its RAM memory , mine certainly has not.
If its storage I seem to recall reading somewhere that when windows does a major update it is basically a fresh installation but it keeps the old version for a period before deleting it.

Apologies, it's storage I mean.

My 2004 update was available a couple of days ago. I put it off until I 'imaged' the C drive.

Updated yesterday.....very quick it was too.

As for disk space I did not even think to check. But yes, because in settings there is an option to return to a previous W10 version......there will be a 'rollback' folder somewhere.

run the "disk cleanup app"
and select system files and delete old version.

Found the 31.3GB in there. Is it safe to delete it?

hi BB...............
is it sufficient to establish a 'Restore Point'...?

I have been trying for ages to install W10 Pro V2004.......downloads 100% the Install sticks at 80%......
did you have to disable your AV and rely on the built-in Defender during the Update...?

thanks
UPDATE

fresh attempt to install
download now stuck at 1%.....help..

Not sure what to advise.......but AFAIK such a significant update overwrites previous Restore Points.

Other making a C drive image using Macrium Reflect I did nothing other than accept the "Restart" on the Windows Update settings page. AFAIK the download had already been done. I clicked restart and left it to get on.........about an hour later I came back the find it with my Windows login page waiting.

I use ESET AV and did not disable it.

My PC has an SSD as C drive and only has the OS on it..........and has something like 100GB free space.

My laptop got in a total mess with this and eventually I did a reset which cleared out rather more than expected but it's like a new machine with various long term niggles resolved.I',m calling it a reset but it actually downloaded a new Windows 10 image.

thanks - do you need the original W10 disc to do a RESET ...?
- my W10 Pro was installed by the shop

the farm is only on 2Mb download - a new W10 D/L will take forever
No it will be in your recovery options I would think.
I don't have a disc anyway in fact this was a Windows 8 laptop originally.
No files were removed but various programs were to re-install - it took most of half a day all told.

We only get 4mb download here it will trickle down over a day or two once you start it off.
You can still use it until the actual installing starts, and you can chicken out at that point if you like

I too had trouble with the 2004 download and install process it took an age to download and that is on 200MBs connection. It eventually spit it’s dummy out with an error code.
Now when I check for updates I’m advised that my PC is up to date, though it still on the 1909 version or something like that.

remember low connection folks
use the media creation tool to create a nice juicy bootable USB you can then use many times

I GIVE UP ......I'd install LINUS if I knew how all my Programs would react...................:((

It's likely that almost none will run under Linux using WINE apart from Orifice. It's what kept me with a Windows machine all these years really.

Thanks for the earlier help. This post now seems to shot off on different tangents that only include problems with upgrading to 2004. Not really what I was asking.

I have now checked and found as follows.

There is now a "Windows.old" folder of size 31.8GB this AFAIK is there for rollback/return to previous version purposes.......so delete at your own risk!

There is no temp folder of note or size in relation to the v2004 update.

My C drive has over 88GB of free space.

PS if your total free space on a single C drive is shrinking markedly then maybe time to clone it to a replacement much larger one.....or add another drive (or more) just for data usage/storage???

Thanks for the help Box Brownie.

My C drive has roughly the same space left as yours and again a similar 31.3GB in the Windows.old file. I did read somewhere on my system that these files would be automatically deleted after 10 days but I can't find it now so I'm not sure which files it was referring too.
