I am shooting a Portsmouth FC pre-season friendly game tomorrow. Mega excited, all prepped and ready to go. Managed to borrow a few bits off a friend to, which should help me out :D

Kit list

x2 7D's
100-400
24-105

No 2.8 glass, but I will give it my best with the gear I have. There isnt any real need for this thread, its more for anyone with any experience to give me any pointers :p

Wish me luck :D

On a luverly day/evening.. you dont need 2.8 .. i am at a game tonight and will do it all at f4 .. f5.6 for corners..

enjoy... remember your stool :)

Thanks Kipax! You have been a massive help to me on here! Yes I was hoping that f4 f5.6 might jsut be ok. I very happy its nice weather for it!

Haha funny you say that I think it was you that first said about the stool-and its the first thing I think about probably even before the camera! It makes a massive difference, ive got a brand new one aswell :lol::lol:

Good luck to you James.

Sadly I can't make the game but it will be interesting to see your shots.

Thanks Merc!

Went pretty well overall. KO was pushed back to 8PM which was annoying as I struggled and had shoot shoot ISO 6400 near the end.

Quite surprised there where 5 others guys shooting aswell. Two had 400mm primes I think and another camera/lens each. I missed 3 goals as I tried changing camera and it just didn't work for me and on another one players got in the way. Pompey won 5nil btw

I decided on sitting in the 18yard line and then second half behind the goal nearer the corner flag.

I will post up some photos soon!

Should just add that they actively browse this forum and will stamp on you if they find you posting images, you could lose your licence (if you have one)

Lack of info leads to wrong answers

Gary & Kipax,

This was at Havant & Waterlooville FC, a Blue Square Conference South club, for a pre-season friendly.

If James was there at the invite of H&W and not representing an agency, this wasn't a premier or football league match or one of the cup competitions, then surely based on my admittedly limited understanding the dataco rules per se can't be enforced.

He wouldn't be there working under a Dataco licence, and H&W are not covered by the scope of Dataco - albeit I absolutely agree that Portsmouth would be.

Happy to be pointed out as wrong on this one - but genuinely intrigued as to when the long arm of Dataco eventually runs out in the footballing world.

We get this information now AFTER we have commented....All we are told is Portsmouth..

And so does that change it all dramatically ?

More driven by the home club's league status, the nature of James' "accreditation", or the fact it is a friendly ?

Tks

As Hand W are a conference side there will be certain regs which also have to be adhered to, not sure with out reading there aggrement.

conference arnt too bothered to be honest.. i ahve a feeling OP didnt go under any licence.. just a guess?

Hi guys thanks for the info.

I managed to get a pass to shoot the game from a local paper. I haven't got an accreditation, didn't get any money from it nor was I expecting anything either.

The game was at Havant & Waterlooville ground-West Leigh Park.

I really want I show this forum some of my photos aswell...

You serious Gary? I would like some feedback from you guys-that's the only way I can improve. But in the other hand I want to do things correctly.

You'll find very few professional sports photographers prepared to help you after this comment I'm afraid:

Its like being drip fed info... well now we know :( James you have been around here long enough to know whats what... Amazed you just posted that :(

So if I said it was a paid shoot would you of assisted me? Jezz I've got to start somewhere, and no I don't work free. But on this occasion I felt I had no option. It's something I've wanted to do for ages.

Sorry, I didn't mean to upset anyone :(

You just did.

It's not as if you're new to the forum.

Having looked at your photos, I'll say one thing - they aren't good enough to charge for as a set.

Go back to basics, go through the football threads on the Sports Photo Sharing forum and actually read & learn the advice that's been given to others. You need to work hard at this game & being handed stuff on a plate doesn't really help.

If you'd been shooting as a club photographer, that's one thing - but to shift directly for a newspaper for free? FFS!

Points taken, I would comment back but really don't feel it's worth my while. As they say 'you have to start from somewhere' and I never intended to sell any. Wish I never mentioned the $$$ now.

James, i bet there isn't a single pro on here across all fields of photography who hasn't at sometime given his work away, we've all made mistakes, no one is gonna flog you to death, take it on the chin mate and learn from it

Cheers Gary, I certainly will thanks for your time :)

Its always a touchy subject Jimmy, From a new person working their way into sports photography, it would look like the right way to go about it, by working for free and then expecting some sort of favour in return or possibly future work. You will get loads of future work that way, loads of it !, but dont expect any payment.

Basically set your stall out the way you want to be seen in the future.

If you have the opportunity to shoot a game or two that the papers might be interested in, send it into them clearly stating that the images must not be used unless paid for. This way they get to see your work and if its newsworthy enough, they will pay. At least they will then know who you are and that you are not a 'Push Over'

If not then move on and get some images that they do want, its the only way forward really.

Once you think your images are good enough for publication. You may feel it a good idea to submit a sample, attaching a message that you accept their standard rates for any future work.

The sports section here on TP is a great area to get feedback on your images, probably a good way to find out if your work is good enough before approaching the papers.
Good Luck

....I really want I show this forum some of my photos aswell...

Then go to one of your local amateur/park teams and ask if you can take some match photos, or even if one of your friends plays for a local club side, that way you will be able to post your results on TP and that way you will get the feedback you wanted. Good luck.

I don't want to necessarily drag this up again, but rather than start a new thread...

Here is the quality of photography in the local paper - The News, a Johnston Press publication.

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/pompey-unveil-new-away-kit-1-5306339

Thats the kit launch for Pompey's new away kit. Contrast that to the coverage provided by the Arsenal photographers David Price and Stuart MacFarlane for Arsenal's new away strip:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/27453474@N02/9249519872/in/photostream/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/35115236@N03/9249676294/in/photostream/

I'm guessing that Pompey coverage is joe public on a camera phone - everything on the website looks soft, and they can't all be terrible photographers, but the composition and viewpoint point that way.

So if the newspaper care so little about decent coverage, and certainly either won't pay (in my experience) or would rather crowd source then I'm kind of OK with James using them (or one of the other local rags) to get himself some experience which he might not have had the chance for.

Portsmouth's PR bod needs shooting. That photo should never have got out and the set up is crass.

I'm guessing it was a reporter with an iPhone or compact, but even then it's atrociously bad.

It's 50% the PR's fault & 50% the paper's. I'll bet that the Editor was screaming!

Mind, i could pick fault with the Arsenal one as well, like the players being off centre to the background image, so much so hes even off the image to the right side, they should have spaced them so each actual player was under his own image and even included a model Gunners crest to make sure it came off right.

However, the JP are pretty decent round by me, i work regularly for them for the Yorkshire.Evening post with no issues, its when you drop down from the regionals to the locals that scrimping and tight fistedness becomes an issue.

Lancashire evening post. Burnley express... all want pictures for free.. not just when you offer.. when they are looking... the one time i got one of them to pay...took 11 months... JP are easily the worse people in the world to try and get money out of.....AROUND HERE ...
