Hi,

I have been put in charge of hiring or otherwise obtaining a set of lights for an upcoming nightshoot with a few planes (no more details, yet). Anyone organised anything like this before? Need to get some floodlights/spotlights without a funny cast...

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Harry.

Have you considered portable flash units ? The flash centre hire out kits .

Even a small single-seater plane would need several big portable flash units. The Flash Centre or Calumet.

Ever thought about using movie lights? Not sure of your budget but they can be hired for one day to however long you need them for ... I work for a company that does TV and film lighting (the biggest in the world) and we have a number of divisions (yep it is that big) that may be able to help from broadcast and event type lighting and film lighting through to photographic lighting ... I'm sure they could help - but given the power requirements of some of these lights you may need a generator (guess what ... we do these as well ;) ).

Now I've done the commercial if you want some contact details, let me know - hopefully I've not broken any rules and would rather be upfront with my connection to this company.

Also pref no geterator!
that'll depend on what you've got available from the mains then. I'd assume that anywhere with multiple planes would also have a decent power supply available.

I can have a very good guess at where Paul works... he'll be your man to speak to.

Don't expect it to be cheap though, you're going to need a fair few HMIs, electricians and rigging.

If you don't know how to rig lighting and ballasts safely, you'll need to hire a gaffer. He'll then know where to hire from.

You may need to get a set inspection done too.

Another point to consider is if your working at an airport theres safety concerns, like the others I'd also look at movie type lighting, with possible cherry picker lighting as well.
