As the two other threads about big game hunting were closed because yet again some children couldn't play nicely, I've started this one but only to say there was an interesting programme about hunting in Africa on Radio 4 last night.

i dont agree with the sport hunting of endangers species. be it in the wild or those captive hunting camp things. i dont agree with the argument that hunting aids conservation.

im sympathetic for locals protecting their animals, but i think more needs to done to help them so that they dont have to encounter animals that want to hunt their herds.
 
Yes - I heard that programme too. It was quite an interesting perspective on it. I still don't agree with the "sport" on any level, but this commentary on the other side of the argument was enlightening and even for an animal lover like me, it was enough to make me think that perhaps there really is a bit more to this than meets the eye.

As I said before I genuinely don't understand why anyone would want to shoot something like a lion or an elephant
These are magnificent animals and just to be lucky enough to see them in the wild is something I'll never forget
Buy trying to look at it objectively if they only shoot old or surplus animals that won't breed and the money does go back into conservation then maybe it can be justified

Whether you agree or not, most people who have experience of conservation disagree with you strongly.
Also, pest control is often very necessary.

Like ST4, I agree that trophy hunters should be left go get on with whatever gives them pleasure - where we disagree is that I feel that if trophy hunters feel a need to demonstrate the superiority of their own species then they should hunt without the use of any technology, i.e. on a level playing field. This means no guns, no crossbows, no vehicles:)
 
Let the trophy hunters hunt each other - they get their bloodlust satisfied and there will be fewer a***holes around.
 
One of the contributors to the programme mentioned that the trophy hunting helps conservation argument might well be correct in some places, eg Namibia where the human population is low, but in many other areas it doesn't hold water. An estimate is that to raise a lion to the age and size for trophy hunting needs about $1m of investment in the conservation of the land and its family, so the suggested $50,000 to hunt a lion really doesn't help at all.

However, the programme is not just a claim that all hunting is bad; IMO it is well worth a listen.

I can't understand either. Why people have to assert their dominance or whatever other weird thing is going on by hunting is beyond me.

But that said I do realise people do hunt. I'd rather they hunted a farmed animal in a canned hunt then a truly wild trophy animal if they have to

Our species created technology, we evolved to create it. It's not our fault we are superior and we should use our superiority as we see fit IMHO.

They're bigger, we are smarter. Evolution sucks for them...

By superior you mean keep getting our ass handed to us by nature despite our iPhones? Yeah sure.

Edit - I should have said mother nature. We do a great job of using our "superior" way of living of destroying the rest of nature.

How superior do you feel when you're in a sprint race with a cheetah? Or diving with a sperm whale? Or flying with a hawk? Or debating with an intellect?

That's how the last two threads got ruined certain people turned the thread into a crap slanging match not saying that it was Steve it wasn't
but it's so annoying that you can't have a decent discussion without it degenerating into crap

Out of interest what's your position on the use of pesticides that have contributed in the mass decline of pollinating insects?

Collateral damage from our superior pest killing skills? Who needs pollinated crops anyway.

Collateral damage happens.

If you hate our superiority so much, why live in a house, drive a car, wear clothes, work , pontificate on the web.

Why not live in a cave, walk barefoot and become a troglodyte

To put it in Billy Basic for you - our overstated opinion of our own abilities means we're killing off species we rely upon for our food... and despite our superiority we are apparently utterly powerless to stop it.

I've worked in countryside conservation for about 20 years - and i'm yet to encounter anyone else in the feild who does who thinks that "sustainable use" actually contributes anything to the conservation of rare species. - in simple tems if you want to conserve a species licencing someone to shoot some of it in order to use that cash to support conservation of other individuals is penny wise/pound foolish

I do agree that 'pest control' is often necessary but rare species don't belong on the pest list (hence why you can shoot corvids but you can't shoot raptors)

I agree up to a point, but if a set of deffective genes need removing or a sick wounded animal needs taking out, why not let someone pay big bucks to do it. And plough the money back. Rather than a ranger do it as part of his duty ?

Steve, you must be really thick and the only one (apart from me evidently) who understands your own posts. All the kind people trying to help you out, educate you by explaining things in basic terms to you. I bet you don't feel partonised or trolled in any way at all or are yo too dumb for that as well.
