Beware Cowboy Cavity Wall Insulation

You should have a guarantee
It sounds to me that the walls are not fully filled, which is creating cold spots which then in turn is attracting the hot moist air in you house to condensate on them

Insist on a boroscope test to be carried out at the problem areas

Good point on the borescope test stumac. It could be cold spots in the insulation or it could be something else to blame totally unrelated to the cavity fill.

When you insulate you have to ventilate as well as the structure is now more thermally efficient and potentially retains more moisture laden air.

I agree about the cowboys and unfortunately it is something we are constantly working on
I personally think its too many sales men on commission only

That is my fear too stumac.

Thanks for your informed comments and thoughts on other posts.

Water does not pass across bead , but fibre will soak up water and cause problems, here in n.ireland we haven't used fibre in years

That's a very telling statement stumac and good to know.

As a company and because of our large property portfolio, we are always being cold called by insulation companies.

Thank you for your advise, I will drag out the paperwork, must admit sure as sure never got anything from the local authority, would say its not been registered. Not good, thought I'd go for a known company as well. Oh best dig out papers then, if nobody here's from me I've got lost in paperwork lol

I'd short circuit the system first Stokesy - just ring the Building Control Section of your local council, give them your address and post code and ask if they have a cavity installation registered to your address.

If they have you're away - if not it could be the start of some trouble.

Good luck either way

I was wondering how easy it would be to have the cavity wall insulation removed? I have solid walls so doesn't apply to me.

If someone invented a way of having that removed they would be on a fortune.

We remove it, and yes it's a fortune

In Northern Ireland the home owner informs building control BEFORE the insulation is fitted
It's my job as a company to tell them this as most people don't know.
Its another Fail safe for the customer as an inspection should be carried out.
I should think its the same on the mainland

I wish we had your system stumac.

Over here provided the installer is CIGA registered as a "competent person" they install and certify their own work and just tell the Council when its done. They don't to apply for permission - as registered "competent persons" they can self certify and just tell the Council when its done.

No inspection from the Council at all.

I prefer your system by far
