If you had the choice netween Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens , or Tamron 150-600 g2 which would you choose?

The sigma.

Only because I owned one and it was a well built, pin sharp lens. It also has the optional dock for programming. I don’t know if the tamron has anything like that.
 
Thanks for reply Ecoman, both lenses are a chink cheaper than the Canon 100-400 lens. Still around £1000 pounds new, so comments like yours very helpful.

Easy typo to make - as is sh*tter instead of shutter...
 
Another vote for Sigma. I have one but have never tried the Tamron so I cannot really compare. However the Sigma is very good and well priced.

Also thinking of Canon R7, first move into mirrorless, fair number of videos on Youtube suggesting that autofocus isn't great. Anyone who had replied used the Sigma/R7 together.

Morning Brentor, using Canon 80d and 70d just now. My wife can't walk past birds at the moment, so I thought she may be better with the eye focus tracking that the R6 or R7 offer. She has the Sigma 18-400 on the camera permanently but can't "fill" the frame too often, therefore the thoughts of the 150-600 lenses . RF 100-500 over twice the price of the Sigma/ Tamron.
Don't know which way to jump.

I have an R7 and a Sigma 150-600. The bird and eye tracking is a big step up from the DSLR cameras. If the main aim is to photograph birds then the extra reach of the crop sensor will be very helpful. The AF system of the R7 is deemed to be less good than other R cameras if you believe internet reviews. One of these had a response from Canon which effectively confirmed this. However most of the issues I have seen are when the high burst rate is used. I don’t have this problem as a do not use high burst rate.

There are also reported issues with the Sigma lens hunting on R cameras. Again I think this is related to high burst rate.

If this sounds negative don’t let it put you off, the AF is quite remarkable.

As an aside please read the reports on noise. It has a high mp sensor for an APS-C camera and I find it noisy but in most cases denoise programs work wonders. I try to keep the ISO relatively low but this is often not possible with birds.

If you have doubts the Canon Test Drive Test allows a free of charge test for a couple of days.

The RF 100- 500 is a great lens but at a price.

Good to hear from you as you have the combination we're thinking about. One video I watched called it "pulsing", started negatively, but ended up saying that you got abour a third of the photos sharo in the burst mode. Won't be using the very high burst rate often if at all.
Think we've discounted full frame for the reason you suggest, extra reach on the crop sensor. Looked at the R6 and R8.

Just some thoughts to consider is to have a look on the net as to how much light f stop at the different focal lengths within the zoom. Secondly the speed of the AF motors as with flying birds this can be an issue more so if they flying erratically or towards you especially nearer where you are.

Thanks for suggestion.
Lens is f5 at 150mm, going out to f6.3 at 600mm. I think around 75% of time will be near 600mm.
It was easier with an old 50mm lens, didn't look at animals or birds.

Hi Black Fox ,been away for a few days, sorry for late reply.
Can I ask what body you use the Tamron on?
As I said up above, considering Canon R7, for the psst few weeks there has been an abundance for sale on MPB. Beginning to wonder if the " autofocus problem" has people trading in for another model, or am I overthinking it.

It’s on a Nikon D500 if you look in the D500 thread you will see some sample images .. as for the R7 my lad bought one a few weeks ago and is now selling it having found it inconsistent and he has bought a Sony a7riv and Sony 200-600 with a possible 200-800 pending

few weeks ago there were at least twenty for sale on MPB, some with 1000 shutter activations.
Other side of that coin, lots of people very happy with the R7.
Think I might get a 150-600 Sigma/ Tamron and delay move to mirrorless until we see what happens with Canon new models.
Then again, at my age , if I delay too long mine could be on MPB with 1000 activations
 
Age is just a number John ,I’m racing towards 80 but I still get out and hand hold my shots

Possibly due to selling before the R7ii is released which is likely to lower used prices.

I think I have a slight advantage over you. At 72, numerical dyslexia would make me 27, when you turn 80, you will be 8, too young to hand hold heavy lenses.
Oh how I would love 45 minutes on a football pitch again.

If you have never used one of the 600mm lenses you could be in for a shock as lifting a 2kg lens plus body for hours can be quite tiring. Of course I’m just making assumptions based on your age.

That's a good point. Hopefully won't be doing too much panning over the course of a morning/afternoon. If I were to go down that line, think I would need ti consider one of the mirrorless cameras with eye detection sooner. Very mixed reviews on the combination.
More or less gave up photography for years, getting back into it now, how things have moved on.
 
Another option and my main system is the Olympus om1 either mki or mkii coupled with either a 100-400 or 300f4 both lenses take t.c’s with no loss of iq and all up rig weight is circa 2kg . And that gives you market leading Birds Eye I.d and 7 or 8 stops of I.b.i.s and lens i.s ..

Not sure if you mean a change to Olympus body and Olympus lenses. Wish I hadn't got my good lady interested in photography.
Two options, camera gear mysteriously falls from a seaside pier, or she does.
 
Yep change to Olympus/ oms you won’t regret it
 
I use Sigma. My photo buddy started with Tamron but had problems then switched to Sigma.
 
I've been impressed with the R7 autofocus, I use if for athletics and motorsport mostly. It doesn't disgrace itself when compared to my 1DX Mk II and the 7D Mk II it replaced. I can't comment on how well it works with Sigma lenses though. I have tried it with my Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 and didn't notice any issues.

Hi black fox, had a look on internet at Olympus . There is s camera OM1, and another Om d e m1, think I've got that nearly correct, which body is it you suggested?
Have , somewhere , an old OM -2 N film camera, hasn't seen thr light of day since the early 80's.

The one to go for is the OM1 mkii it’s the latest and top of the range model , the second one you list is a ten year old camera .. just have a look in the Olympus thread on here plenty of photos
