Hi All

Having given up my previous hobby carp fishing, i have now embarked on my long road to becoming a, hopefully decent snapper. This will combine my love of outdoors, family and my inability to sit in front of the tv.

I have done the easy bit, i now own own my first DSLR but now the hard work begins. I have a canon 500D:), but am a total novice never using such a camera before:thinking:. I live in Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire, and would like to attend a beginners course, but cant find anything that would suit, any ideas??? I have been caught on the magazine front before with fishing, but could anyone advise me on a suitable Photo mag to suit my oh so low level.

I believe talking to people who have been in a similar position is always the way ahead............ i am thank full to all suggestions

Hi PJ. There are loads of mags out there but you are probably better of starting with some books from your library and the manual for your camera!

Photography is all about experimentation so take your dial off auto and put it into av mode. Read up on that and off you go!

Any questions ask on the forum but do use the search as it may gave been asked already!

Hi Patrick. I am a beginner as well with my first DSLR camera. I read the manual (more than once!), had a play with the camera so I knew where all the buttons were and then booked myself a couple of days tuition with a photographer. And learned lots! Also did an 8 week evening class in Photoshop. That was back in April. Since then I have bought myself a subscription to a camera mag and one day a week I do something with my camera. Either go out and shoot a landmark or a waterfall etc or do something around the house and garden (still life, flowers etc). It is all practise. Come September I intend to join my local camera club so that I can learn more from others.
Good luck!

How was the tuition with the photographer, was it worthwhile, and if you dont mind saying.....was it costly..............

Patrick,
Yes it was very worthwhile. Up til that point I had never used a tripod or knew anything about filters etc and I learned loads. In fact I have booked another couple of days soon. It is £170 per day for one to one tuition and the day can be as short or as long as you like. I didn't take advantage of that as after 8 hours I was shattered but I could have had another couple of hours longer! I wanted to learn to shoot landscapes and of course he knew where exactly to take me to do a variety because I didn't know what type of landscapes I liked to do. I started off thinking if I finished the 2 days with a couple of shots that I would be happy to hang on my wall I would be pleased but in fact I had loads of pics that I liked.
One of the reasons I did it was because I didn't know anyone that I could learn from and I thought it was worth every penny. You can only learn so much from a book!
I am surprised that there is very little on the forum that talks about photography courses etc.
