Better straps - Peak Design etc.

Going on holiday soon and I'd like a better strap. Looking for one that can attach to the bottom (tripod thread) and one side of the camera so as to hang downwards and be long enough to go under one arm. I also like the idea of the quick-release ones like the Peak Design models as it would be handy to detach the strap quickly and easily sometimes, e.g. when using on a tripod etc. Peak Design have a few straps that seem to fit the bill but at a pretty price - are they really worth it? Alternatively, is there a similar alternative available at a better price?

Peak design onto an arca plate is what I use .
The sling when out and swapped to the cuff when at home.

Personally I like my Joby Ultrafit because it is easy to tighten the camera against my body when moving around and then quick to release when shooting

Me too! I also usually attach a long quick release plate to the camera. It has a tripod mounting hole at each end. I attach the Joby sling to the back hole, and then if I'm using a tripod or monopod I attach that to the front hole. No need to remove the strap. Also since most of my lenses are big, shifting the support mounting hole a bit forward moves the support closer to the combined centre of gravity of the camera plus lens. That means better balancing and less ball head droop when I tighten it up.

Another vote for the Joby. Although ive moved on to the PD Slide, i still have the Joby. Its a clever design and IMO better than the Black Rapid equivalent. The only reason why i dont use it is it needs to be screwed in to the tripod hole, and thats less convenient than using a strap.
While im not judging anyone that keeps a tripod plate on their camera, i really cant get on with that. The camera doesn't sit flat on a surface, the extra width makes it harder to get in and out of the bag......and i hardly ever use a tripod lol.

I rarely use my tripod so I don’t either.

Ive just noticed there is a later version of the Slide out. i have the first gen, which i use all the time (ive had a few of these), i have the Summit version that i never use, so why on earth am i looking to get the SL2 lol.
I do love these straps, even though they seem to have big flaw in them.

You mean Slide Lite? Or do you mean the one in grey with leather?

The Slide. The one on their website (black and grey) is a second gen one. Mine (and my previous ones) is a gen 1 version. Not a huge difference but they are there. The clasps are different for a start.
I do also have the first gen Leash which will actualy hold my 80D and 18-135 fine.

Thanks all. Ordered a Peak Design Slide now. dave_bass5 - when you talk about the flaw, you mean having to have something attached to the tripod thread all the time?

No, you dont need to attach anything to the bottom of the camera.

The flaw i mentioned, and has been confirmed by PD as a 'feature' is when you are using a heavy camera/lens combo, and wearing the strap across your torso, the strap will extend over a short time. This is due to it rubbing against your body. The buckles will hold a lot of weight, and if you pull on them they dont budge, but the friction between body and strap will effect the length.
I have had 4 Slides. my first was replaced by PD because of this, the second did it, I got a Summit that did it and also got that replaced. My mate has also had two and these did it. when i use my 80D with something like the 18-135 its fine, but my 5D4 (was 5D3) with a 24-70 f/2.8 will cause the issue to show.

Saying all that, i wouldn't use anything else, especially will never change my MK1 strap, as that doesn't suffer from the creasing like later versions do, inc the Summit version which is really bad).

Ah I see, thanks for that. How can they claim that as a feature?!

when i complained about this, they sent me new straps, no questions asked. After a while i saw a few others mention it, and looking on their website in the Support community i came across this reply to someone who had the same issue.

'There is no actual locking function on the handle. The snap in place is there in order to keep the pull handle in place.

We designed the friction doubler on that portion of the strap to be "quick adjusting". This means that it's normal friction load is enough to keep it from pulling through under it's own weight, but intentionally slides easily when any parallel force is applied to the doubler mechanism. Striking this balance means that the mechanism might appear to "slip", when in actuality, it is likely being moved by an external force (such as rubbing or bumping). Ideally, users will get adept at using the pull to quick adjust the position of the strap throughout the day, depending on the carrying use.

As a test to make sure your friction doubler is working well, you can ask people to pull hard on the strap to see if they can get the doubler to move on its own. If it is working properly It shouldn't move and we've actually never seen one that does'.

I didn’t got on with peak design. Lovely looking strap though.

I use a BR cross shot and leave my tripod plate on camera with BR fastener and then put the fastener that came with the strap on my 70-200 lens foot.

I use a black rapid rapid draw strap - it's brilliant. I bought a cheap arca swiss clap that the adapter screws into which allows me to keep the plate attached to the camera base - it also means I can pick up either of my cameras and attached the strap easily. I also have a security tether clip in case the clamp comes undone. Works for me.

Would the PD Slide or Slide Lite be good for a medium weight camera/lens like D750 and 20mm or Fuji X-T2 and 16-55? I mean just attaching it at the sides as normal and wearing it cross body? The advantage is that you can unclip the body at any time.

Any other alternative source with the same functionality?

I use the PD Slide on my D750 but that often has a heavier weight lens than the 20mm on. I suspect the PD Slide Lite would be sufficient - the D750 + 20mm is a similar weight to X-T2 + 16-55 looking at specs ... but the "full" Slide isn't huge (IMO).

Been using my PD with a gripped d800 and a 24-120 all day with no issues - couldn't be without it now

Have you found any comfort issues with the PD slide or Slide Lite for carrying a reasonably heavy camera/lens around for a few hours? I mean, does it dig in to your neck/shoulder area after a while because of the lack of padding?

Nope - none. Wish I'd discovered them sooner. Bought one for Mrs. Chuckles too. Now, if anyone is going to complain about the weight/comfort..... ;)

LOL - it must be good then :D

Thanks - although Eloise is using the S Lite I think the regular SLide might be better as I think it has a bit of padding and would be good if I used a tele zoom

Just for clarity, I have the (full) Slide, was just saying that the Lite would probably be sufficient for a D750 and 20mm as it would certainly suit your X-T2.

Sorry Eloise, I mis-read what you had said. I'm not sure if the Slide Lite would be ok if (for example) you had a 70-200 f4 attached to a D750?

I would agree... anything more than a smallish prime would need the full Slide (IMO).

No issues with comfort, at least not with my Slide. I did think the Summit version was a bit more uncomfortable compared to the SL1, but still not uncomfortable per say.

I even use my Slide as a bass guitar strap, its that comfortable.

Having read some of the reviews of the current Slide it does seem like it suffers with a bit of creasing. Not as bad as the Summit but not quite as good as the SL1.

I have the pd slide I use it with my d750 plus a 150-600 Or with the nikon 70-200 2.8. No issues
