Hello to you all,
just wanted a bit of advice regarding a new lens purchase
i use a Canon 600D which is all i need (great camera and very happy with it) ..over the last 12 months i have bought a few lenses
nifty fifty 50mm 1.8 (great for the price)
kit lens 18-55 ( but dont use it)
55-250 (had limited use when i've been in the field, sporting events etc.)
Tokina 11-16 F2.8 (the best purchase by far)
i have started to take a keen interest in LANDSCAPE & URBAN SHOOTING so the Tokina has had loads of use but now i've got the bug i'm thinking of an "L" lens to compliment my Tokina, for maybe street use urban walkabout use! .and also a bit of portrait/people shots out & about

would the Canon 24-105f4L be a good choice or would i be missing out on the few mm in between the tokina's range 11-16 = 24-105

really like what i've read about the "L" 24-105 .. so i supose i'm just waiting to be tipped in its favour ... or is there anything else in the price range £600-£700 that i should look at for my needs ...

any good advice would be helpful

On a crop body I can't really fault my 15-85 EFS. It meets your Tokina at the wide end plugging the gap the 24-105 has but doesn't have the same reach or constant F4. But it's a couple of hundred quid cheaper the glass is pretty much comparable and as it's a bit lighter probably feels a bit better balanced on the 600D.
 
Take the L off and would you still want one?

Get a quality 17/18-50mm f2.8 and it'll be much better suited to an APS-C camera.

No, but there are just as good EF-S only lenses available for the crop sensors.

The 24-105 is the full frame "equivalent" of the crop 15-85 (wider zoom range and not f2.8). I would find the 24-105 wrong on a crop sensor (I've owned both the 15-85 and 24-105 at the same time, together with a 7D and 5D2)
 
The Tamron 17-50 2.8 Non VC is a phenomonal lens for the cash. Got mine for my 400d a few years ago and still use it constantly on my 550d.
 
i bought a Tamron F2-8mm 17-50 vc version for my 600D and i totally love it great pictures sharp vibrant just brilliant !! its now on my 60D its a great all rounder good at 5-6 and F22 its a little heavy and the barrel on my copy is still a little stiff but other than that i wouldnt hesitate bo recommend it to anyone wanting to upgrade the kit lens . .go for it on Amazon its about £360 now worth every penny !!!
 
I had a Canon 24-105 f/4L on a 5D, it was spectacular. Great all-rounder.

When I upgraded to a 1D Mk3, the lens became a little less of a all-rounder as it wasn't as wide. I was going to grab a 17-40L to get that wide angle back. Then situations changed and I sold my gear.

On a 1.6x crop, the 24-105L wouldn't be on my list. Go for the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, it is practically a L lens without the L - mainly just because it won't work on a FF camera. Even if you do go FF in the future that lens will hold its value as it is a sought after lens.

Anyway, that's just my 2c. :thumbs:
 
as mentioned, it's just illogical to use a full frame walkabout lens on a crop body. the L lenses are not the answer to every Canon lens questions, if you are on crop, there are much better EF-S lenses.

don't get me wrong, i love my 24-105L for its sharpness and perfect focal range. but it's just not designed for crop sensors, 24 would be 36mm field of view.



for landscape urban shots, what is wrong with the kit lens?

for faster lens, get 17-55mm f2.8. it's EF-S equivalent of 24-70mm f2.8L.

for more zoom range, get 15-85mm, it's not quite equivalent for lack of constant aperture, but closest to 24-105mm you can get.

No, not at all, but as said that lens was designed for a 35mm/full frame camera and personally I think that a quality 17/18-50mm f2.8 is a much better match to an APS-C camera unless you want the extra zoom of the longer lens and are willing to give up the wider end.

Personally when I had APS-C I went for a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and it was a cracking little lens. On your camera it'd be the equiv of 27-80mm whilst the 24-105mm would be the equiv of 38-168mm.

oh and go on a course to learn a bit more about the kit i've got.
has anyone been on a CANON EXPERIENCE SEMINAR ? ... namely the essential overides seminar (making the most of your digital EOS).... i think more knowledge could be the key to making the most of what i already have
great forum and very helpful by the way, ... think i will stick around a bit longer
