Best zoom for aviation and airshows

If all goes to plan, then I am shortly going to be able to get a new lens, and am looking at a Canon 100-400mm.

Is there any other lens that I am overlooking?
 
Well ... that's by far the most popular lens for aviation and airshows. I guess there must be a reason for that.
 
guess theres also the sigma 120-300, but 300 might be a bit on the short side.

I'm currently using a Canon EF 70-300mm IS, and yes, extra reach is something I am after, along with IQ, hence me looking at the 100-400mm, and although I know I can't go wrong with that lens, I just thought I'd ask the question in case anyone had any other ideas or thoughts.

Hmmm in that case the 100-400 is a great option as it should be good for single plane shots and group shots (such as the reds).
