Was wondering if anyone could suggest a good zoo to visit to photograph tigers in the most natural looking environment possible. I'm based in the Midlands. Please share your experiences / pictures...

A safari park maybe....

At a normal zoo you will have the problem of bars/cage/glass, if they were not there, niether would you be! As sugested, a safari park would probably be your best bet, but DO NOT OPEN THE WINDOW to take your shot! Again you will have glass to shoot through so make sure it's clean before you go!!

Asia is the best place, Sorry dont agree with Zoo's

that is what i was going to say..corbett is good in india
and here is the elusive ranthambore female
we were feet away from her....in an open wwII jeep
and i may add..engine running and in gear

its scanned from a 6x4 machine print and PP to hell to get some mileage out of it..next time i go on safari i will take a digi

Nowhere near to you but I was at Marwell Yesterday and captured these.......

No editing, straight off the camera and not fantastic shots but if anyone viewing would like to C+C it would be welcome.

Please bear in mind, they were shot through wire fencing!

Cheers

With a bit of saturation, vibrance and a sharpen they would be pretty good shots. Digital photos should always be processed on your PC, you need to do it to get the best out of them.

Get yourself down to the WHF (Wildlife Heritage Foundation) in Kent.

Cheers Richard, C+C appreciated.

As I mentioned, straight off camera as didn't have time yesterday and working today. Usually do a little with Photoshop.

Just thought it was apt considering I was photographing a Tiger yesterday....

Will try and get some done and post on separate thread.

the wires dont show up all that much
good collection and the animal looks fairly healthy and happy
if you ever get to see them in the wild you will see the difference
cheers
geof

Appreciate the replies guys, obviously I would love to go on a proper safari to photoraph tigers but in the mean time my little boy wants to look at the real thing and I would like to take some nice photos for him as a sort of mini-photo challenge to myself.

Have you been and would you have any pictures you could post? Came across it when googling and am very interested in paying them a visit. Anyone else with more to say about them, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Ok. Here goes. These are some of the tiger pictures I've taken this year.

Marwell has a wire fence which is quite easy to get rid of.

Copenhagen has excellent viewing. No fence. No windows (The pen is sunk). There is a raised viewing platform. Right now, they have three cubs..

Rotterdam has excellent foliage which might help for your purposes although this picture doesn't show it.. Mostly you look down through it and a wire fence.

The tigers have recently moved from Edinburgh to a reasonably large enclosure in the Highland Wildlife park. Mostly the view is through windows but there is a small amount of direct viewing. When we were there, the enclosure was rather bare and new. It may well improve with time.

And then there was the tiger kite we flew in Berck sur Mere, about 24 meters long...

Just wish I'd had time to do something with them!

Good luck with your photo challenge and I hope your lad enjoys it. I had my two year old swing on my leg all the way round this Zoo!

If you're patient and lucky there are some really great opportunities at Whipsnade
(Not brilliant I know)

Yes, I went in July. :)

Go to the Animals & Nature sub-forum. Search for keywords such as; heritage, foundation, kent (unfortunately you can't search for WHF as it's only three letters) and you will find literally hundreds of threads/shots.

There's a massive thread regarding TP Group Visits here.

the "roller" had a 2x tc as well hence being a bit soft

Dudley Zoo right next door to you has a Sumatran Tiger enclosure with no obstructions - bars or otherwise. This was taken there.

Oh yes, I see that now!:shrug::clap:

Cheers for sharing the pics gaffer, really fancy a go at photographing the cubs at Copenhagen now but was after somewhere a bit more local!!! Nice set of pics and thanks very much for the info.

Cobra - nice shots and thanks to you also for sharing.
CT - it's been ages (by that I mean 15 to 20 years!) since I paid Dudley Zoo a visit, I'd all but forgotten about it. Lovely picture and I think this might be my best starting point.

Went to London Zoo on Sunday, wire fence to fight but if you can blur it out the results are ok:

Dudley Zoo has changed a lot in recent years, and there's millions of lottery money earmarked for further improvements. Dudley took a lot of stick and rightly so for those Polar Bear and Lion Pits of a few years ago. The Tigers are in one of those old pits but there are raised up platforms virtually at eye level with no obstructions and you don't need long lenses either - 200- 400mm will do the job.

Overall it's not the best place for photography with lots of wire mesh in the way at many enclosures. The walk through Lemur enclosure is fantastic though.

I'm going on the TP shoot there this Saturday and can't wait. I'll post some feedback after for you if you like :)

SmilleyShazza - I would be very grateful indeed if you would post a review and maybe some sample pics. Tar very much.

Took these the other week at Whipsnade. As already said, you can get close to them if they come near the glass bit, but there's also a raised viewing bridge on the far side which allows a view without any glass or wire mesh provided the tigers decide to go to the right bit of the enclosure. Need a reasonably long lens though - these are using a 300mm and are cropped quite a bit.

Also, a few years ago, took this one through the glass at London Zoo. I have to say that despite being the other side of thick glass, the stare was quite unnerving!
