best way to re-create this lighting?

really look at the picture and you can work it out!!

Flash either side and slightly behind the model - no on camera flash! You will also need a couple of flashes to light the background.

lol, no need for the 2 !! :D
i can see that there is a light source to the side that creates the shadows, but was wondering what would give the best effect, ie directs light or bounced off a brolly or soft box, bear with me, only got the gear recently and had no previous experience of off camera flashes etc

it's called double rim lighting - ideally probably two soft boxes as there is a little more control than with a brolly. Also if you have a friendly model you can experiment as you can see the results as you go along. Have fun! :)

be sure to let us see how you get on! :)

Yes, that's double rim lighting, although not done very well.
You can get similar results very easily, with one light each side of the model and behind, but you'll get the same problems unless you control the light by using 2 softboxes, each fitted with a honeycomb - and even then, you'll need to position them carefully to avoid flare. Make sure that you have a perfectly clean lens and a good lenshood if you're not using softbox honeycombs, and experiment to see how acute an angle you can get away with before you get flare.

Here are some example shots (again NSFW) lit with honeycombed softboxes.

thank you, 3,5 and 6 are close the look i'm after, only have one soft box so i may have to improvise.

Yes, that one was at my studio too. As you can see, just one honeycombed softbox was used for it.
In lighting, less is often more.

it's a lovely shot, at the moment all i have is a standard softbox 27" x 19" so i'll be doing as best i can with that :)
