(Wasn't sure the best place to put this so if there is somewhere better let me know)

i'm going to want to send single DVDs to my folks on a semi-regular basis and I was just wondering what the cheapest safe way to do it was? I was thinking simply card board sleeve taped up along the open edge and either an address label on the front or address just written on would probably be about as cheap as it gets. Is it worth getting small jiffy bags which will increase the overall cost of posting quite a bit?

Any recommended suppliers for packaginge?

Thanks :)

I've been sending single sleved DVD's in folded over envelopes, no card or bubble protection, for ages, and never had one arrived damaged.

If you do this they stay under 5mm thick and I just stick a second class letter post stamp on them.

I would however not do this with un replaceable files just to be safe.

49p Jiffi Bags. Offers good protection (I use thin plastic sleeve, not the hard covers) Postage is about 66p first class.

Sounds like its worth a try - its only to send some pics and videos so it doesn't really matter is it gets destroyed as I can just do another.

Thanks

That was my backup plan if nothing else was suggested. Will try the envelope first though :)

Last time I bought Mail Lite size C/0 padded mailers they were £7.49 per box of 100 (in case you fancy flogging off the ones you don't need).

Think I've been ripped off:bonk:

I post them in the proper DVD cases taped up, 12p for the case and 48p for the stamp.

um... a proper DVD case is over 5mm thick and so in the "large letter" catagory - which is 75p or something (I should know how much as I only posted one yesterday... but got a brain like a...like a...thing with holes in...corriander...)

p.s.
don't buy a box of 100 dvd boxes because its cheap, you may end up with them clogging-up cupboards for years, DAMHIKIJKOK...

I have a pile of stamps and they are only marked 1st or 2nd class and normal or Large size. I've just checked and you are correct, the 1st class is 75p and the 2nd class is 58p so it's went up since I bought them all.

Where did you get them from - had a very quick google and it seems that they are a lot more than that?

eBay for the bog-standard mailers. Poundshops are worth a look if you only need a few.

yep, standard mailers that'll work with a normal stamp :)

well I've found that they dont fit in the standard size envelopes we have at work (not that I was pinching one - just trying it for size :D ) so took apart a light cardboard box and just wrapped it up and covered in sellotape. Will stick it in the post tomorrow and hope it arrives in one piece.

Might have to get larger envelopes :)

One final thought, we get DVD's from the film rental people at Love Film, and they are sent with minimal protection.

They must send thousands of DVD's and if they were prone to getting damaged in the post they would be better protected.

What do you mean by minimal protection? Cardboard sleeve or something else?

I have now posted the first one this morning so will find out if it arrives in one piece. Of course I've then got the problem of trying to explain to my folks how to view the pics and videos......again :D

The DVD goes in a plastic sleve and that goes in a return envelope that when it arrived was folded over so double thickness on one side. On return it's just a normal envelope.

Good luck with the folks and the digital files, my Dad is a nightmare with his digi cam and the computer :D
