Possibly a bit of GAS but looking for recommendations please for best vfm lens to go with my Canon R7. I'm happy to look at EF mount as I'll probably go pre owned.

I've got an EF 16-35 f4, 70-200 f4 and 100-400 ii and I'm finding the focal length gap between 35mm and 70mm a bit limiting on occasion. It won't be a main lens but ideally would be used for general photography, occasional portrait etc. However I would like decent optical quality budget £500 ish but might be prepared to stretch

Any suggestions appreciated

I have, and would recommend, the EF 24-70 f/4. It's small and light and just tends to stay on the camera far longer than it probably should.

The EF 24-70 f2.8 II is superb. I had one for a few years, sold it when I hadn't used it for a while thinking I could get away with my 24-105. However, after lockdown I started doing more indoor and podiums shots again, I realised my mistake and bought one again. The clarity/contrast and sharpness vs the 24-105 is very noticable and focussing is much better in low light conditions.

I've actually ended up with two copies of the lens, as I recently bought one as part of a bundle deal of a camera body and lenses from someone who moved entirely to mirrorless after getting a nice work bonus.
