Yes
I have decided to extend my range at the wide end. as crimbles is nearly here :-) budget upto £500 ish

so which ultra/supa/extra/ ... wide angle lens is the best and why ?

any to avoid ?

I have read the sigma is hit and miss on IQ ?? tamron any good ?

or should I play it safe with canon ? is canon a safe bet ?

should I consider going full frame ??? would it give me better lenses for my money ???

help !!!!!

I ended up going for the Canon. Not used it yet as it is a birthday present, but to try to save you the effort of doing as much research as I did, I came to the conclusion that the Canon was the better option.

I also understand both Tokina UWAs are worth having as well (11-16 and 12-24) but I decided I preferred to have the range that the Canon offers.

Full frame and a Sigma 12-24! Well, you wanted W-I-D-E!!! And looking at Mifsuds ad, they have one in Nikon and in Canon for £499, 2nd hand so within your budget too (apart from P&P).

The Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 is very highly regarded but only offers a tiny zoom range. This is the lens I will be buying next.

I initially bought the Sigma - decided it was soft, returned a day later to Jessops and a wod of cash and got the Canon instead.

Nice sharp lens, should have bought Canon at the start.

Heard great reviews about the Tokina.

The canon 10-22 if you can afford the extra, amazing lens and sharp when stopped down slightly. Sold mine when I jumped to full frame but I would of kept it if it had fit my 5d markII.

+1 on canon 10-22... It's more expensive than sigma, but no risk of getting a bad copy. I've been using it for a few months now, and am very happy with the results.

Kerso will do you a good price for a new Canon 10-22, just slightly over your budget (circa £525 delivered).

Good thing is the resale price of the Canon is usually quite high too around the £400 - £440 mark.

camera box have the canon for 489.99

no complaints about the canon lens then ?

no hurry :-)

still investigating !

in real life, how much difference does that odd 1 or 2mm make at the wide end from the
10-20
11-16
12-24
etc etc

10 or 20% ??

:plusone: for the Siggy 12-24mm....future-proofed for full frame too...

I would agree wholeheartedly if you can get a good one! This is a lens that really needs to be bought where you can try it out first! Too many soft copies in existance.

Morning matey (RT from VZi here) - I've been looking into this question myself, and the balance of opinion always seems to come down to the Canon - from what I keep reading, the quality is 'L' in all but name...

:)

If your not using a tripod maybe..........;)

I've actually used a monopod with my 10-22 indoors with very good results. Provides the extra bit of stabilisation needed whilst being very portable and quick to use.

I'd add a vote for the 10-22mm Canon :) no doubt about it - great lens...

tokina 11-16 £400
Canon 10-22 £500

nearly there ... I'm ready to buy the canon ... credit card out and everything :-)

only thing to check ... is the canon £100 better than the tokina 11-16/2.8 ?

I dont mind spending the extra if it is, as I would only want to upgrade in the future if I didn't !

but, no point spending where it isn't needed either ! :-)

You get the extra 4mm at the long end, which could mean the difference in changing lenses at a later stage.
It is a really good lens.
Go on, you know you want it.

BTW. the Canon is not fixed aperture.

Where did you go to school :p

6mm at the long end and 1mm at the short end.

LOTS. The difference between 12mm and 10mm is huge.

If you don't believe me, ask yourself why Nikon recently brought out a 10-24mm DX when they already had a perfectly decent 12-24mm DX in their range. Answer - because Sigma's 10-20mm was eating their lunch.
