Hi all, Im just wondering what people think is the best 70-300 Sony fit(for my a200) lens for around £150? Thats really the top end of my budget, any opinions would be very much appreciated. Oh and I hope everyone had a good Christmas!

It would probably be a Sigma 70-300 APO or Tamron 70-300 DI. My Sigma is different to the current version, but I have heard plenty of good things about the current one.

I bougt Tamron 70-300 DI ; was available for less than 100 quids and is a good lens for the money...

have heard good things abt sigma too but a few Sigma's have faced problems on A700...

Check reviews on Dyxum!!!

cheers

Aj

the Sigma is known to have a tendency for the af gears to strip (they are plastic) on later generation Alphas with the stronger af motor.
So for that price imo I would get the Tamron.

without a doubt the best 70-300mm for Minolta AF/Alpha mount is the 70-300mm G SSM but that's ~£450 atm.

I stand by to be corrected, but I have only ever heard of a700's striping the gears of Sigma APO's.

The a200 also has the uprated motor from the a700 so the stripping of gears is a strong possibility. Even my old KM 5D stripped the gears from a Sigma 70-300 APO.

It's not a 70-300 but the "beer can" Minolta 70-210 f4 is an amazing lens for the price that can be picked up for around £150 second hand. I've had that and the Sigma 70-300 APO and I can tell you that it is head and shoulders better.

I also have the Beercan70-210 ,excellent lens for the money, but getting harder to come by

i may be selling the sony 75-300 soon, as getting the 70-200G.

had a friend with an A100 strip his twice & a 50-500mm as well.
I've also seen reports of the 24-70 EX DG & others stripping too, shame as some of the Sigmas are optically very good for the money but I personally would be loath to chance it these days.

having a quick look on the land of ebay

minolta do a 70-300, what are these like and going cheap

Had that problem with the sigma 105 a few months ago, but have had a 50-500 for a year now and that's been fine, and it has had a lot of use. I also have the 24-70 and, touch wood, no problems so far.
