Sorry if this question is a bit basic. At the moment I shoot mainly football, I use a Canon 30d, I use an aperture of f4 (the widest the lens will go) but have to set the ISO manually (as there's no auto ISO) and aim for a shutter speed of at least 1/800. This involves playing around with the ISO to maintain a high shutter speed.
Now, I'm hoping to buy a Canon 7d later this year. What would be the best way to set the 7d up to achieve f2.8 (say) shutter speed of 1/1000 (say) and should I use auto iso?

Hi, to achieve f2.8 you will need to obtain another lens, that can open up to f2.8. A 70-200mm f2.8 would be ideal for football
I generally don't use auto ISO unless the pitch has parts in the shade and the other bits in sunshine or the light is changing constantly.
I normally like to set camera to manual and dial in the aperture and shutter speed that I wish to use and then spot meter off the grass and adjust the ISO to suit.
However under low light, I open the aperture full max out the ISO and hope for a usable shutter speed.

F4 is ok during daylight but just keep an eye on your shutterspeeds. I use auto ISO mainly as I shoot during changing/fading light so I can maintain shutter/f stop.

Thanks for replies so far, so is the best setting manual on the top dial? I must admit as a novice going manual scares me a bit!!!

In constant light or with auto ISO manual is ideal. In changing light Tv may be better for you but important to keep checking your exposure. The reason I suggested Tv is if you maintain a high shutterspeed you shouldnt suffer from camera shake if the shutter drops too low. If the light drops and you dont adjust you will have underexposure but may be able to rescue some/all the images. Not ideal but can only work wioth what you have.
