I am currently renewing my kit with all canon instead of sony :gag:, jessops recommendation! However I am struggling with the transition to FF.

Really I can only afford to buy 3 lens, 70-200 2.8, a wide angle and a prime. Now I have the 70-200 sorted. But I am struggling to figure out which wide angle and prime to get.

DO I stick with a standard 50mm or try a 28mm? I think an 85 would be too expensive.

Also I have no idea where to start with the wide angle. I have quite a tight budget about £700 to find the both.

Any help would be great

Jess

Canon 17-400mm F4 = £400-500
Canon 50mm F1.4 = £200-300

They are used prices and I dont know whether you are interested in new or used kit but that would be my suggestion.

I've just bitten the bullet and bought a Canon 17-40mm F4 for my 5D, and I will eventually get a 50mm F1.4

But budget doesnt allow that at the moment.

Hope that helps
Many Thanks
Jamie

Hi Jamie

Thanks for that, I have been offered a 50mm 1.4 for £250 or a 28mm prime for £300, not too sure which one to go for!?

How wide do you want to go? If you want ULTRA wide, try a Sigma 12-24. On FF, it's VERY wide.

As for prime, what do you want from it? If you need ultra shallow DoF, then a 50mm f/1.4 is probably the best bet. If it's just some extra speed, will you miss the slight extra of the f/1.4 over the f/1.8? If not, save a few quid and go for the f/1.8. Want to explore Macro? Plenty of choices around the 100mm f/2.8 area. Have a look at Mifsuds's website and see what they've got in stock 2nd hand.

For an FF I'd suggest a 50mm lens for prime, and something like a 16-35L for your wide angles. Although... the 16-35 is very expensive so there's 17-40 or Sigma 12-24 (:gag: wide) if funds don't permit.

eeeeekkkk a sigma, I have a couple!! Not much choice really when i comes to startup business. One day I will upgrade to L series lenses but right I have to work with what i have, which right now is not alot!! I have £1500 to get a FF body and 3 lenses! Good luck you say.... but I have the body sorted, canon 5d, and a sigma 70-200 2.8 with about £400 to spare!! So not doing too badly so far, seen a sigma 17-35 2.8 mifsuds for £299.... hopefully that will be there on monday when they get back in and I have the funds!

But one day a canon babe i shall be!

If you'll consider used...I have a Canon 20-35mm USM which seems fine although you can't go wider with a zoom than the Sigma 12-24mm which I think is an outstanding lens.

For primes I love my Sigma 20mm f1.8 (they do very similar 24 and 28mm f1.8's) and 50mm f1.4 and also my Canon 50mm f2.5 "macro," but it isn't a macro really.

An 85/1.8 prime would be around the same price as the 50/1.4 (just stating this as you said too expensive).

If you are getting a 70-200L f2.8 I wouldn't bother with an 85mm lens as you already have that focal length covered. Personally for £700 I would look for a nr mint S/H 24-70L f2.8 which would give you decent coverage of 24-200 @ f2.8.

24mm is quite wide on FF.

If you really want wider, I would go with a 17-40L and a 50mm f1.4 or the Sigma version.

I have recently moved to FF also with a 5D and i am also finding the transition weird as hell having only ever used crop sensor dslr's.
I have the 28-135mm IS which i find is more than wide enough for my needs and the 50mm f1.4 which i find really good.
Dont think you will go wrong with a 50mm f1.4
