Now Nigel, did you read the title?? you're supposed to come on here and tell me i can get one for 3 screws a nail and some glue!!

But i like the sentiment.. be sulky in the corner.. then you can gloat when i find out i cant really afford one!! lol...

C'mon guys.. im in need..

Is it just me or does that auction look a bit dodgy :suspect: Then again I hate using eBay/Paypal so could be my bias playing up...

Spec-wise that seems okay but it's a bit backwards in the graphics dept. Are you completely set on getting a Mac Pro? Top spec iMacs are pretty decent these days compared to before.

I'm going through the same process, here are the best places to try..

www.Jigsaw24.com based in Nottingham
www.ghc.co.uk based in Alfreton
www.krcs.co.uk various stores around the country (You will get educational discounts from these, I'm starting a part time college course in photography on Wednesday, I picked up my student card today, went into these and asked do I get discount, they said yes, iMac 24" 2.8ghz normal £1149 discounted £1091 you'll save upto 8%)
www.computerwarehouse.co.uk Based in Middlesex, again educational discounts are available.

Try John Lewis as you get a 2yr warrenty on all macs from them.

Also Apple themselves offer discounts for education.

I'd avoid ebay, but thats just me.

Hope this helps.

Agree - the 3 Ghz 24" imac is your best bet - has the better graphics card. The Mac pro's are pushing out a lot of heat compared to the iMacs - I would go imac as well....

Also on the sites I listed they offer end of line and refurbs at good prices too. Apple UK site has a refurb section on the bottom right of their store page.

id prefer a Pro as id like to put extra storage inside.. i dont think the imac has much room for expantion..

Im gonna have a look at the refurbs now..

Thanks..

educational discount is 17.5% if you're eligble - or your kids are.
employee purchase programme is roughly 8%. (NHS etc.)
Duty free, not sure if they do imacs etc at Currys in the airport will also save you 17.5% and you don't have to take your purchase with you, they deliver.

apart from that - what ^^said.

and have a look at the product cycles on the apple website or mac rumours. they don't announce what's about to be released and you can be a bit miffed if you find out they release a stonking upgrade more than a month after you get yours.

As already mentioned - John Lewis. In my experience, they offer a slighltly better deal than ordering direct from Apple.

I have a Mac Pro. Almost £5000's worth. It's lush :D

Thanks for that guys.. i went into Apple on Regent st today and was drooling over them!!

i think im going to get the Pro, i want to be able to add to it as times goes by..

My daughter is in Collage so maybe i can get the discout eh!! that'll be nice..

Im going to try and order it tomorrow, so i'll post up what i finally get..

Thanks for the info guys..

It arrived at 9.30 this morning! now thats fast!! lol..

I have'nt unpacked it yet.. i cant wait to see how it performs..

whats the verdict then?????

Apple do a 6% rebate with quidco.

I don't know myself, but I know of a shopping forum that might ;)

Mind the doors!

Anyone getting a Mac and wanting any specific advice you can PM me if you like. There is some useful information on my site:

www.upgradeyourmac.co.uk

Mac PRO = My best advice is get the smallest cheapest hard drive as the cost of even the cheapest upgrade is MORE than the cost of that drive! You can buy a Samsung 1Tb drive for £80 inc VAT now and reinstalling MacOS onto that drive is a 1 hour job! PLUS you still have the original drive to use with time machine or as a photography backup, remember you have 4 HD slots!

ANY Mac = Get the smallest amount of RAM it has never been cheaper to upgrade memory!

Mac PRO = There is a law of diminishing returns on processor cores but you cannot upgrade the single quad to dual quad as the socket is missing !!

Mac PRO = The actual speed of your pro is a combination of several things: processor speed, number of cores, memory (and to a lesser extent number of devices), graphics card and hard drive. A 8 core 3.2GHz machine with 1Gb of ram and a 250Gb drive would be slower than a 2.66GHz quad core with 8Gb ram and a 1Tb Samsung drive in certain circumstances! - Basically what I am saying is don't put all your eggs in one basket! Spread your money out between options ie if you can afford a 3.2 get the 3.0 and a better hard drive & more memory - This will be a faster computer!

ANY COMPUTER = A 3.2GHz processor is only 6.7% faster than a 3.0GHz processor on processor speed alone BUT if you put one against the other in real world applications the actual difference will be about about 3% (because the computer is not always waiting for the processor!) and in reality you will never be able to tell them apart !!!

Upgrades on Apple machines - Apple machines are superbly easy to work on, I cannot believe how easy it is to upgrade especially the pro. You can remove the side without any tools. Pull drives without any tools etc etc

OH nice tip, as I think I'll be getting a Mac Pro after the anticipated upgrades

Apple are notoriously generous with their student discounts and throw them around like confetti if you have a student in the house get on the phone! At the moment Students get a free video ipod AND the discount on the PRO is MASSIVE. We got a discount of about 18% on my daughter's Mac Pro and they never even asked for any proof (although she is at art school so we did have some!). They are FAR more generous when you RING them and order it over the phone.

My daughter's Macbook pro 17" hi-res was £1398 rather than £1759 and again free video ipod.

You can get the discount even if one of your kids is doing GCSE art if you ask nicely (but only on the phone!)

Will I get a discount if my niece or nephew is away at uni ??

THEY would get a discount (plus a £60 discount off a printer, with the cheapest printer being £60! & a free video ipod) and the uni discount is larger than the college discount. It does not need to be for sole use of them but they do need to use it.
