Im after a point and shoot for under £200. It needs to have an optical viewfinder and ideally more than 3X optical zoom. Any suggestions?

What sort though? ultra thin sort of thing?

Doesn't need to be ultra thin, but the smaller the better. Needs to fit in a pocket easily enough. Its to replace my mums dying Ricoh caplio r1.

Sony DSC-H7

Ok I'm £14.99 over but this has got to be one of the best all round cameras for the price:

I still use my DSC-H1 when I can't be bothered to get out the Nikon for a quick photo its an ace little camera with a massive optical zoom when needed, a 2x teleconverter and macro lenses are available for it aswell.

you can see a brief review here:

Thanks for the suggestion, but that is too big. That seems more like a bridge camera than a point and shoot.

Is the optical veiwfinder absolutely necesary?

They tend to be poor on smaller cameras anyway (IMO of course).

So my reccomendation goes to a Fuji F31FD if you can still find one. Much better than the 'upgrades' (F40/F50 etc). Best camera i have bought. It's always with me and has been everywhere with me including scuba diving (in a waterproof DicaPac of course ;) )

Yup, im afraid so. They may be poor, but not as poor as EVF or screens. And my mums is used to optical viewfinders now, so id rather get a camera with one.

I had the same with my mum, so i lent her my F31fd, stuck it on auto and left it with her for a weekend (Battery is good for 550 shots +). She now has a F31fd and 2GB Card :D

The screen on the F31fd is excellent (the f20 is low resolution) and the good ISO performance means no blurry pics.

But i understand your prediciment (sp??) so good luck in the search ;)

The Canon Ixus 75 should really be looked at, despite the fact it lacks an optical viewfinder. The 3" screen is amazing, and thats coming from a optical viewfinder lover!

Yep I was going to reccomend the 75, it's much better in my opinion, the 3" screen is essential for a P&S.

But since he's looking for one that has to have a viewfinder, I suggest the 70. It's basically the same just with a smaller screen and viewfinder.
