Yes
Here! I hear you say, well at 15 posts I am a long way off being able to use the classifieds and I want to sell the lens now.
So avoiding ebay if I can(fees etc) is there anywhere else anyone can recommend?

Thank you :)

Id say gumtree or avforums if your a member, i dont buy things from preloved as they make you register to contact peeps, what lens is it?

if you are considering getting 'another' lens in it's place

then talk to Matt at MPB - advertises here

i recently traded in a Nikon lens and got a very good/fair deal

the lens i received was as-described === mint

i would not use Gumtree - too many scammers and risky personal contact IMO

Thank you for these replies. I'm not wanting a trade but a straight sale. This is the sort of advice I was after as the last thing I want is to be messed about with the sale so thanks again. My boyfriend is a member on avforums so he could list it.
I dont feel I can say what the lens is as it could be seen as avoiding the classifieds and trying to sell it on this thread. (and I dont want to get into trouble :) )

 Avforums (already mentioned above) - sorry guys & gals for mentioning a rival site :coat: :exit:

edit: Ooops too slow

you could also try POTN its mainly american sales but put uk in title and you will be ok as there are a few brits registered and some from this site too

I'm a member off Avforums and its very good but be warned that if your new theres a huge possibility that members would want you to post first

ive never had a problem with gumtree, as logn as your selling local

Yeah. i've never had a problem with gumtree either and regularly sell things there, and buy. As long as you're sensible then you should be fine. Don't give out your home address, meet somewhere public and don't accept anything but cash on collection.

Gotta ask - why the hell did 'the powers that be' decide on 100 post's before you can access the for sale section? I run my own site (motorcycle related) and am a member on a dozen other sites and the longest wait on any is 25 post's.

Think your losing out on some long term members because of this. Just my opinion of course (or is it? ? )

Because they did (and it's their trainset)?

There are numerous threads about how and why the restrictions were imposed, and 100 posts is hardly a huge barrier. I'm surprised that more people don't complain about the 30 days instead.

The main reason for the 100 post rule is to prevent people coming onto the forum and selling stuff for free and not contributing any wisdom or information to the community.

The post limit was increased to deter people from signing up, spraying the critique section with "nice shot" posts just to get access. Some people still try this but fail, often with embarrasment.

EDIT:
Note to self - must type quicker than DemiLion

I'm on an iPhone. I couldn't type slower if I tried! :D

Why do you think that?
If they are keen 100 posts isn't too hard to manage and long term members will no doubt already have the requisite number of posts

likewise I have a couple of lenses to sell. I've just sold one on eBay, it sold for far less than I had hoped, & that's not including the fees from eBay & Paypal which I've yet to pay. I'm in no desperate rush, though, & so I'm slowly working my way up to the magic 100 post mark so I can sell them here.

using myself as an example - due to the stupid hours I work etc I find it hard to find the time to keep up with forums, I have even had to out-source the admin on my own site.

For me to make 100 post's will take a long time as I don't like to just log on and fill every post with 'oh that's nice' etc etc. (Considering I joined on 16-07-10 and have only just made it to 15 posts)

Needed to find a Minolta lens today, would have been nice to ask here but alas. . . . had to go to another site.

Won't put me off but it also means I wont be here as often as I would like - being a 'glassaholic' I like to view / read up and buy.

(I'm not wanting to sell anything BTW)

I have a posting rate of 0.17 a day and that works as being able to sell in just under 2 years. I'd describe myself as a keen photographer, but IMNSHO a keen photographer 'takes photos', not 'makes posts'.

When all is said and done, the TP admins have every right to set it to 1000 posts if they so desire - it's their baby.

Please don't take this as being snide, but if you find it so difficult to make time to post, how would you find the time to keep up with a sales thread when deals are often completed in minutes let alone hours?

As far as I understand it is to encourage people to be active members of the forum rather than taking advantage of the great deals that can be had/easy and trustworthy way to sell and then never being seen again, ultimately it's not hard to make it to 100 posts, I have been a member for about 8 months and have racked up a little under 1300 posts and I'd like to think a fair percentage are high quality posts, I've also attended a couple of forum get togethers and I am in the process of helping to organise the next meet.

I should add I don't spend every waking minute on here either.

It's also to help ensure that rogue traders don't come and steal peoples money. It's not worth the hassle which makes it better for all. I was in the same boat when I wanted to trade but it didn't take that long really and was worth it.

I find preloved is OK fr main stream lenses but you'll struggle with primes and more specialist equipment.
I recently sold a lens on eBay and had to pay £40 in eBay fees along!!!! But you will get a premium price.
Gumtree has too many dodgy sellers but doesn't mean there are all trying to scam you.
Fridayads is another site worth checking out.

Fair enough, guess i will have to find more time to post - hope I didn't upset anyone with this, it really wasn't my intention.

Now that this side issue has been resolved and David is now a little more enlightened with regards to our "protective" stance on the access to the classifieds sections, can we get back to helping the Op find a suitable outlet for their lens please.

:)

Sorry, All, I'm just going to go back to the original topic of this thread. I recently pxed a lens and a tripod with London Camera Exchange (branches all over the place). Got a pretty good deal, I think. I don't think you need to buy from them necessarily if you just want to sell.

Hi there Very Green,

I have to say that the 100 post rule is annoying here! I've been a member for a while here but I doubt i'll get to the 100 posts in, years. Shame that they won't take my 5 years of POTN history as a guarantee of usefulness! I understand though.

I too have a few pieces of Canon gear to sell right now and I do look for UK stuff on POTN forums but as someone else pointed out, that's almost entirely US members these days. I will never sell high value items on ebay due to the extortionate fees and GumTree is a mine field!

So, I guess I'll be putting up some posters on trees or something :)

I totally disagree with your statement there, it's actually very easy to make 10 non spammy comments on here per day by offering your thoughts on other members images and sharing your knowledge with less experienced members. With a daily posting target of 10 it would have taken you far less time than the minimum period required and you might have learnt something into the bargain.....WIN all round really.

:)

I think its a pretty good system actually. There are always places to dump stuff quickly and having a vested interest in a community definitely improves rapport between buyer and seller. Not having the likes of eBay chancers jumping all over it definitely is a plus too.

That said, I'll see again in about 94 posts time!

Before you joined this site where did you buy sell gear???
As been said loads and loads of posts on why how and what about the 100 post rule.

Hope that does not sound too rude its not meant too.

As to the OP have you tried to sell the lens through the sales part in your local paper?? Just a thought.

I can understand about putting scammers off, but what about members who want to buy, not sell? I can't think of any dodges that a buyer can pull if they've sent a cheque and had to sign for the item on delivery.

Until a while ago I could still browse the sale section, but now I can't see the sales at all, I used to enjoy looking through it.

Regarding the post count, does anyone know why my count is showing about 6 fewer than I've actually made?

Have you posted in the welsome section or the out of focus section??/ these do not count to your post count
